Andrej Sládkovič
Andrej Sládkovič (actually Andrej Braxatoris ; born March 30, 1820 in Karpfen , Kingdom of Hungary , today Slovakia ; † April 20, 1872 in Radvaň , a district of Neusohl , sl.Banská Bystrica) was a Slovak Lutheran pastor and writer.
Life
Andrej Sládkovič was the son of the Hronsek- born author and teacher Andrej Braxatoris (1782–1845) and his wife Therese nee. Bartolomeides. After attending the high school in Karpfen (1826-1830) he went to Perőcsény in Pest County to learn the Hungarian language . He then studied at the Protestant lyceums in Schemnitz (1839–40) and Pressburg (1840–1842). From 1843 he studied theology at the University of Halle (1843–44).
Between 1839 and 1840 Sládkovič worked as a private tutor in Paul Pischl's house in Schemnitz, where he fell madly in love with the daughter of the house, Maria Pischl. Maria Pischl was very talented and a student of the natural scientist Christian Andreas Zipser who was the director of the secondary girls' school in Neusohl . Sládkovič's love for Maria was not reciprocated, but this encounter inspired the poet to write the cycle of poems Marína, which is one of the high points of Romanticism in all of Slovak literature.
In 1847 he was ordained (installed) as a pastor and worked first as an Evangelical Lutheran pastor in Hrochoť and from 1856 until his death in Radvaň.
He was a member of the circle around Ľudovít Štúr and one of the founders of Matica slovenská .
Sládkovič was married to Antonia geb. Sekovič-ová, the marriage resulted in the son Martin Braxatoris (* 1863, † 1934), who was also an Evangelical Lutheran pastor and writer.
The asteroid (4781) Sládkovič , discovered by Zdeňka Vávrová on October 3, 1980, is named after him.
