The Banská Bystrica – Dolná Štubňa railway is a main line in Slovakia . It runs from Banská Bystrica over the Malý Šturec saddle to Dolná Štubňa .

history

In the years 1936 to 1940 the spectacular and technically complex connection between Banská Bystrica and Turčianske Teplice was established. In accidents during construction, 35 people died and 492 were seriously injured.

Route description

The route initially runs in a south-north direction in the Zvolenská kotlina basin . In the central part of the route between Banská Bystrica and Turčianske Teplice there are a total of 22 tunnels; the longest is the Čremošné tunnel (4.7 km) under the Malý Šturec saddle , which separates the Great Fatra and the Kremnick Mountains .

The Čremošné tunnel is the longest railway tunnel in Slovakia. Depending on the political situation, it was named after Edvard Beneš , Andrej Hlinka and then again after Beneš.

In the 2018 timetable, express trains that serve the Banská Bystrica station and the Horná Štubňa obec stop run every two hours, local transport is no longer available. Freight traffic is of minor importance.
