Kewpie
The Kewpie or Kewpie Doll is a doll . The name is derived from the Roman god Cupid .
history
It became known at the beginning of the 20th century when it was first produced in 1913 in Ohrdruf in Thuringia . The templates come from drawings by the American Rose O'Neill , who commissioned the production in Germany. Biscuit porcelain and celluloid were used as materials at that time . The production of celluloid was discontinued after a department store fire because of the high flammability of the material. Production in hard plastic began in the late 1940s . The kewpie became popular in occupied Japan after World War II , where it was also produced. The dolls from this period are labeled “Made in occupied Japan”.
In Castle Ehrenstein Ohrdruf many copies are to be seen; The history of origin and production are also presented.
