Ovčiarsko (until 1927 "Ovčársko" in Slovak; Juhászi in Hungarian - until 1907 Ovcsárszkó , Ovcsárzsko etc.) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 686 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

geography

The village is located in the western part of the Žilinská kotlina basin in a flat valley. From the south the foothills of the Súľovské vrchy mountains reach into the municipality. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 429  m nm and is nine kilometers from Žilina .

Neighboring municipalities are Dolný Hričov in the west and north-west, Žilina (districts Žilinská Lehota , Strážov and Závodie ) in the north and east, Bitarová in the south and Paština Závada in the south-west.

history

In today's municipality, remains of a settlement from the Late Bronze Age, a settlement and an urn field of the Lusatian culture and a settlement of the Puchau culture have been proven.

Ovčiarsko was first mentioned in writing in 1289 as Olcharzk . It belonged to the manor of the Hričov Castle , later to the Kožar and Dohnányi families . In 1598 the village had 19 houses and in 1720 15 taxpayers. In 1828 there were 29 houses and 271 inhabitants who lived from agriculture and worked as shepherds and shindlers. In the 19th century there was a distillery in the village.

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Ovčiarsko had 555 inhabitants, including 529 Slovaks, three Czechs and two Ukrainians; one resident belonged to a different ethnic group. 20 residents gave no answer. 483 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, five residents to the Evangelical Church AB and two residents to the Greek Catholic Church; four residents professed a different denomination. 28 residents had no denomination and 33 residents had no denomination.

The place can be reached via the 3rd order street 518001. It begins at Dolný Hričov at the intersection with 1st order road 18 and runs through Bitarová and Hôrky to Žilina.

The nearest train station is in Dolný Hričov, three kilometers away, on the Bratislava – Žilina railway line , and several national and international connections stop at Žilina train station, 13 kilometers away .

To the southwest of the village, a section of the D1 motorway , which will run through the Ovčiarsko tunnel , is under construction until 2018.
