Malá Čierna (until 1927 “Malá Černá” in Slovak; Kiscserna in Hungarian ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 345 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

The municipality is located in the northern part of the so-called Domaniža basin ( Domanižianska kotlina in Slovak ), surrounded on three sides by the Súľovské vrchy mountains. The Hvojtová stream flows through the center of the village . The center of the village is at an altitude of 530  m nm and is 21 kilometers from Považská Bystrica and 25 kilometers from Žilina .

Neighboring municipalities are Súľov-Hradná in the north, Jasenové in the northeast, Rajec in the east, Veľká Čierna in the south and Bodiná in the west.

history

Malá Čierna was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1471 as Kys Charna and was first in the territory of the Lietava Castle , later in that of Považská Bystrica. In 1598 there were nine houses in Malá Čierna. In 1720 10 taxpayers lived in the village, in 1784 the village had 28 houses, 35 families and 208 residents. In 1828 there were 18 houses and 261 residents who were employed as shepherds, beekeepers and forest workers. In 1905 the residents built the first school building.

Until 1918, the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then belonged to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1947 the community was electrified, and in the same year it was connected to the telephone network.

According to the 2011 census, Malá Čierna had 353 residents, including 350 Slovaks . Three residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .

334 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church and three residents to the Evangelical Church AB. Seven residents were non-denominational and nine residents had no denomination.
