Svederník (Hungarian Szedernye - until 1907 Szvedernik ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1,447 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

geography

The community is located on the southern slope of the Javorníky Mountains on both sides of the Dlhopoľka brook in the catchment area of ​​the Waag . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 328  m nm and is ten kilometers from Žilina .

The municipality also includes the places Zárieč-Keblov (incorporated in 1961) north and Marček (incorporated in 1907) east of the main town.

Neighboring communities are Dlhé Pole in the north, Divina in the northeast, Divinka in the east, Horný Hričov in the south and Kotešová in the west.

history

According to archaeological studies, there was an urn field of the Lausitz culture in today's municipality. The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1392 as Zedernek (other sources indicate as cedar as early as 1321 ) and was part of the Budatín estate . Smaller parts were owned by the Hatnyánszky and Rakovszky families . In 1598 seven houses are recorded, in 1787 the village had 58 houses, 68 families and 331 inhabitants. In 1828 there were 57 houses and 443 residents who earned their income from agriculture, linen weaving and livestock farming.

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, 1010 people lived in Svederník, 968 of them Slovaks, four Czechs and one Moravian and one Ukrainian each; two residents stated a different ethnic group. 34 residents gave no answer. 829 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, nine residents to the Evangelical Church AB, four residents to the Brethren Church, three residents to the Greek Catholic Church, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Jewish community; seven residents professed a different denomination. 85 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 69 inhabitants has not been determined.
