Ďurčiná (Hungarian Györkeháza - until 1907 Gyurcsina ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1098 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Okres Žilina , a district of Žilinský kraj .

The community is located in the south-western part of the Žilinská kotlina basin at the foot of the Little Fatra , more precisely its Lúčanská Fatra mountain range . Several small streams flow through and around the place in the catchment area of ​​the Rajčianka . The center of the village is at an altitude of 510  m nm and is three and a half kilometers from Rajec and 24 kilometers from Žilina .

Neighboring communities are Rajec in the north, Kamenná Poruba in the northeast, via an exclave again Rajec in the east and southeast, Rajecká Lesná in the south and Šuja in the west.

history

In the Young Bronze Age there was a settlement of the Lusatian culture in the municipality . Evidence of this can be seen today in Budatín Castle .

The current place was first mentioned in writing in 1393 as Georklehataya and was probably created under German law. It was part of the domain of the former Rajec Castle, later the Lietava Castle and partly owned by hereditary counts. In 1598 Ďurčiná owned a mill and 26 houses. In 1784 the village had 89 houses, 122 families and 784 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 97 houses and 920 inhabitants who were employed as shepherds, beekeepers and farmers, in addition to which weaving and burr production were common.

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. From 1971 to 1990 Ďurčiná was part of the city of Rajec.

Historical names include Dyworchyna (1474), Durczina (1488), Giurczina (1598) and Jurčina (1808).

population

According to the 2011 census, Ďurčiná had 1,068 inhabitants, of which 1,051 were Slovaks , three Germans and two Czechs . 12 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

1046 residents professed to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident to the Greek Catholic Church. Four residents were without a denomination and the denomination of 17 residents has not been determined.
