Richard Birkefeld

Richard Georg Birkefeld (born June 8, 1951 in Hanover ) is a German writer .

Life

After training as a typesetter, Birkefeld worked for several years in print shops, publishing houses and advertising agencies in Stuttgart, Bremen and Hanover and was on a long journey with the MS Europa . During this time he traveled extensively to Scandinavia, Canada / Alaska, Central America, North Africa, Asia Minor and Southeast Asia.

Birkefeld then studied history and politics at the Leibniz University in Hanover (1985–1991). His master's thesis dealt with the development of spectator sports in the twenties using the example of the Eilenriederennenn in Hanover. During this time, Birkefeld was on the board of the Hanover History Workshop, in adult education at ver.di, the Association of Lower Saxony Adult Education Centers and as a freelancer for the culture magazine "Living".

In his activities as a research assistant at the historical seminar, at the Institute for Building and Art History and at the Historical Museum in Hanover , he was involved in various exhibition and catalog projects, including a. “Leisure and modern life in the twenties”, “50 years of Lower Saxony”, “Biedermeier and revolution. In 2002, Birkefeld and his fellow historian Göran Hachmeister published the contemporary historical novel “Whoever remains is right”, which was awarded the Friedrich Glauser Prize for the best debut in 2003 and was awarded 3rd place in the German Crime Prize. In the Danish translation, the book was nominated in 2012 for the Scandinavian Palle-Rosenkrantz Prize and in the French edition for the Prix des lecteurs Rue des Livres 2013. This was followed by the novels "German Championship" (with G. Hachmeister) and "Tod einer Stracke ".

Together with Susanne Mischke and Cornelia Kuhnert, he is also the editor of various anthologies.

Birkefeld is a member of the Syndikat authors' group and VS and lives in Hanover.
