Venetian Charade (English original title The Anonymous Venetian; German "Der anonyme Venetianer") is the third novel by the writer Donna Leon from 1994. The German edition was published in 1996 in a translation by Monika Elwenspoek by Diogenes Verlag .

content

The body of a man in women's clothing is discovered near a slaughterhouse in Mestre . Commissario Brunetti and Sergente Vianello then investigate the transvestite milieu. They meet lawyer Giancarlo Santomauro. He is the chairman of the Lega della Moralità , which supposedly rents cheap apartments to people in need.

The identification of the dead is only possible with the help of Signora Mascari, who confirms that it is her husband Leonardo, who was the branch director of the Banca de Verona in Venice . It turns out that the rent payments for the social housing managed by lawyer Santomauro are also processed through this branch. In a conversation with Mascari's successor, Marco Oliveri, he explained to the inspector that no irregularities had been found in the business books.

While the widow Mascari knew nothing about a double life of her husband, one such is described in great detail by his successor. However, Brunetti and his assistant come to the conclusion that this is pure fiction. In fact, Signore Mascari's killers only put women's clothes on the dead man to steer the police investigation in the wrong direction. Mascari had found out that Santomauro and Olivieri rented the alleged social housing at a high price and ran it into their own pockets. Brunetti finally finds out that the woman's shoes that were put on the corpse were bought by Santomauro - and he was also the killer.
