Dark Legends 2 ( Urban Legends: Final Cut ) is a 2000 Canadian-American horror film directed by John Ottman .

action

An airplane takes off during a thunderstorm. While a young passenger is talking about monsters on the wing and a couple - Rob and Libby - are having sex in the on-board toilet, a knife prick causes a massacre. But then it becomes clear that the scenery is only part of a film production.

At an Alpine University film school, students are busy producing their films for their final exams. The winner beckons the " Hitchcock Award", which, according to Professor Solomon , opens the way to Hollywood . Amy Mayfield, who is still looking for a good story, is thrilled when the university policewoman Reese tells her the story of the serial killer at Pendleton University, who staged his deeds in the style of " dark legends ". When she presented her plan to the professor, he was reminded of Hitchcock.

Meanwhile, Lisa is drugged with knockout drops at a party and ambushed in the cloakroom. When she wakes up, she finds herself in a bathtub full of ice and realizes that she is missing a kidney . Her attempt to escape is stopped by a dog, whereupon the murderer uses the window as a guillotine .

Then further "gloomy legends" are discussed. Amy tells the story of some students screaming together between midnight and 12:01 a.m. to deal with exam stress while another student is murdered at the same time. Her fellow student reports about the woman who hatched cockroaches in her nose after eating a burger , and about a sandwich whose mayonnaise consisted of a chicken tumor . The first scene, shot for Amy's film, tells the story of a dog that licks the hand of a sleeping girl and hangs dead on the shower rail the next morning.

The intended cameraman Toby accuses Amy of plagiarism and threateningly leaves the film set. Shortly afterwards, Amy learns that her fellow student Trevis only received the grade 3 for his film and therefore has no chance of winning the coveted award. However, he gives Amy his cameraman Simon to replace Toby.

Sandra, who stars in Amy's film, discovers that she has forgotten her keys. After kicking her car and triggering the alarm system , she returns to the studio. The murderer lies in wait for her there and kills her with the camera in hand. When the crew looked at the footage a little later, they thought the scene was a successful production and did not realize that they were seeing a real crime.

The next day it is surprisingly announced that the depressed Trevis has taken his own life. Amy, the daughter of a successful documentary film - director , meets the claims that Trevis not in a serving as a bearing tower Trevis' twin brother Trevor, suicide lost, but through murder his life.

The following night, Amy recorded screams for her film. Simultaneously, Simon is killed outside during a cigarette break. Amy borrows the surveillance camera videos from Reese. On the recordings, she sees the cruel act that, according to the legend, happened between 0:00 and 0:01. Now the young director herself is in danger. The killer attacks her in the recording studio. He lures them out from under the piano by playing a few low notes. Amy escapes into the woods and into the sewers , where she meets Reese. But since she lost the video while escaping, she cannot prove Simon's murder.

In conversation, Trevor reveals that he feels guilty about Trevis and wants to set a trap for the killer. Amy, who has chaotic thoughts buzzing through her head, next wants to turn the legend of the "tunnel of horror" ( real corpses appear in a ghost train ). While she is taking a test ride in her ghost train, the killer electrocutes her prop masters Stan and Dirk. Since her car stops, Amy goes on a search and discovers the bodies. Reese can save her from the killer. Amy then complains to Trevor that Trevor did not protect her, but he replies that he followed Graham but lost him. She also points out that Stan and Dirk were only in their second semester and were therefore not competitors for the award.

Amy dreams that Trevor stabs her while having sex. When she wakes up, she goes to the tower to look for Trevor, but meets Vanessa, who thanks for an alleged message from Amy. While Amy several corpses, u. a. discovered by Trevis, the murderer hangs Vanessa on the bell.

Trevor researches that all of the victims participated in Trevis' graduation film "The Gods of Mankind". While watching the film, Amy notices a cut shortly before the end . Someone put the credits on another film to pass it off as their own work. Since they suspect that there is still a survivor from the crew, they kidnap Toby.

You interrogate him in the presence of the professor. When Toby denies the manipulation allegations, Solomon suddenly draws a pistol and shoots the student. He reveals himself to be the serial killer. Amy manages to break free, but the professor takes Trevor hostage.

The motive for his actions lies in the past. As a student, Solomon wanted to win the Hitchcock Award himself. Since the duel was a draw, Amy's father had to decide as a visiting professor and voted against Solomon. Now the professor wants to use Trevis' film for himself and has therefore murdered the crew.

When Reese arrives, she sees Amy with a gun in hand, which the professor wants to use to present her as guilty. In the chaos that follows, the real gun is mixed up with props. Solomon is shot in the final duel. Amy wins the "Hitchcock Award" and is now shooting in Hollywood.

covers

The film is not a direct sequel to Dark Legends , but takes up the idea of a series of murders based on the legend.

However, there are some references to the first legend film.

  • Policewoman Reese starred in both films and made the connection with her account of the Pendleton massacre, which was shown in the first film.
  • Two students are playing a prank wearing the same black hooded jackets as the killer in the first film.
  • The legend of kidney theft, which is being realized here, was already hinted at in the finale of the first film.
  • In both films, the protagonist discovers numerous corpses shortly before the end.
  • The killer from the first part (played by Rebecca Gayheart ) has a brief guest appearance at the end of the film.

Reviews

“Ottman's very lively production can also get a lot out of it. With a lot of handheld camera, flash effects and distorted images, he happily plays on the visual keyboard of the genre and can still create an effective slasher atmosphere from time to time. Reminiscences of the Blair Witch Project and a simply wonderful allusion to Reservoir Dogs play their part in making Dark Legends 2 a lot more fun than an exciting horror film. "

“Two years after the surprise success, Düstere Legenden , the second part comes to the cinemas, which plays with the principle of the“ film within the film ”. At the beginning this gives hope that it will lead to a more stringent plot and that you can guess who the killer is in the best "Hitchcock manner" until the end - you can guess, but the tension soon subsides. And so the strip picks up on this point where its predecessor left off. "
