L. Scott Caldwell
Laverne "L." Scott Caldwell (born April 17, 1950 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actress , best known for her role as Rose Henderson in the ABC television series Lost .

Chicago native Caldwell began her career in 1978 as a member of the Negro Ensemble Company . She got leading roles in plays by: Wole Soyinka , Athol Fugard , Neil Simon and Regina Taylor . Caldwell earned her degree in Theater Arts from Loyola University Chicago . She has an extensive background in feature films, theater, and television. Her most successful films and series to date include: Just in Case Amy , Lost , The Secret Life of the American Teenager , Southland , JAG , Chicago Hope , City of Angels and Promised Land . In 2010 she also starred in the short film Lisa Trotter . L. Scott Caldwell received a Tony Award for her role as Bertha Holly in Joe Turner's Come and Gone .
Life
Caldwell, the middle child in the family, was born Laverne Scott in Chicago, Illinois . She grew up in the Woodlawn neighborhood in the southern half of Chicago. After graduating from school, she went to the theater. It was there that she developed her interest in acting. Even in her early years, she knew she wanted to be an actress like Bette Davis and Loretta Young . During her time at Hyde Park High School , she also appeared in the Drama Club at the same time . One day her school class went to a performance of A Day of Absence . It was the first time they saw professional "black" people play on stage. After graduating from high school, in 1967, Caldwell attended Northwestern University . She left university after a year and worked full time as an operator. She later earned a bachelor's degree in theater and communication. She married L. Scott Caldwell John Caldwell. They had a son named Ominara. In 1980 she divorced and in 2004 she married director, photographer and artist Dasal Banks , who died in 2005.
Career
Caldwell has taught at the Chicago High School of the Performing Arts. She also worked at the Chicago Council Fine Arts. In 1978 L. Scott went to New York City to audition at Uta Hagen’s School. While she waited to be called, she saw an advertisement from the Negro Ensemble Company . After her audition, she took the subway to NEC. There she performed the same pieces that she had previously performed and was accepted by both schools. While Caldwell was spending her first season at the NEC, she was allowed to perform a few pieces.
In December 1984, while working on Play of Giants , Caldwell was hit by a car. She suffered a serious back injury and was unable to work for two years. Shortly after winning the Tony Award for her role as Bertha Holly , L. Scott moved to Southern California to work in the film and television industry. She accepted orders from the USA , Canada and South Africa . Caldwell is an active member of various groups and advocates the rights of women around the world.
