Steve Ditko

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steve John Ditko (born November 2, 1927 in Johnstown , Pennsylvania , † before June 29, 2018 in New York City ) was an American comic artist . As a draftsman, he was the co-creator of the comic superheroes Spider-Man and Dr. Strange . In 1953 he began drawing comics professionally at Charlton Comics . There he created, among other things, the character The Question , which he first appeared in 1967 in Blue Beetle # 1.

Between 1958 and 1966 he shared a studio with Eric Stanton , a pioneer of fetish photography and an important bondage artist of the 20th century. Some of Stanton's works from this period show an intense artistic influence by Ditko. Some critics even believe that they see very clear indications of a collaboration between the two artists. Stanton stated that Ditko had inked his drawings, which Ditko commented with “I dare anyone to prove that I inked that”.

In 1968 he moved to DC Verlag , but was unable to build on the successes from his Marvel Comics time. Ditko invented the characters Hawk and Dove and The Creeper there .

Ditko later co-invented the superhero Squirrel Girl with the writer Will Murray for Marvel .

Ditko was found dead in his New York apartment on June 29, 2018, where he had died at the age of 90.
