Squirrel girl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Squirrel Girl (Eng .: "squirrel girl") is the name of a superhero who made her debut in 1990 in the comic book Marvel Super-Heroes # 8 by author Will Murray and illustrator Steve Ditko . Since 2015, Squirrel Girl has been the protagonist in her own Marvel series, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl .

history

Murray commented that he was "based Squirrel Girl on a former girlfriend who loved wildlife ... and at that point many squirrels were running past his bedroom window." In 2015 it was revealed that this was comic book dealer Doreen Greeley . Murray gave Squirrel Girl the real name Doreen Green and made her debut in an adventure in which she and her squirrel Monkey Joe Iron Man helped defeat the mighty supervillain Dr. Defeat Doom with her squirrel powers (i.e. acrobatic body control, super sharp senses, sharp claws and teeth, bushy prehensile tail, communication with squirrels). Squirrel Girl disappeared for a decade until author Dan Slott included her in the 2004 miniseries Great Lakes Avengers , a parody of the Avengers : these "Avengers" were a team of members with almost useless powers who involuntarily have to save the world. The trend at the time that super villains only appear threatening when they kill an extra (see Redshirt ) was parodied by the murder of Monkey Joe: Squirrel Girl named Tippy Toe her new favorite squirrel from then on. In this miniseries and in the One-Shot GLX-Mas Special (2005) it developed into a running gag that Squirrel Girl defeated the most powerful super villains in the Marvel universe (including Drs) despite her seemingly ridiculous powers (in not entirely serious stories). Doom, Galactus , Thanos , Terrax).

Squirrel Girl was in a relationship with the jerky superhero Speedball during the 2000s before blaming himself for a deadly explosion caused by a supervillain fighting him and has been the grim flagellant named Penance ever since . She visits him in the comic book Deadpool / Great Lakes Initiative Summer Special by the authors Fabian Nicieza and Dan Slott (2007), and he reveals that he just gave up his joke existence to finally be considered a "tough guy". This was viewed as an ironic comment by the two authors on the trend of portraying cartoon characters as somber antihero. In 2010, Squirrel Girl became the nanny of the daughter of Marvel superheroes Jessica Jones and Luke Cage , indirectly making her part of the Avengers. After a few appearances as a supporting character in the New Avengers (2010-13), she got her own series, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (author Ryan North , illustrator Erica Henderson ) in 2015 . She is presented as a computer science student at Empire State University , so that she is following in the footsteps of u. a. Enter Spider-Man and Emma Frost . She is also an avid trading card player who collects Deadpool cards . The first editions of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl sold an average of around 20,000 times. The comic series, which has a strong retro character, received positive reviews as a “refreshing counterpoint to the bombastic, grim comic adaptations” and “homage to the fun Saturday morning cartoons of the 1980s”. An anthology of the Squirrel Girl Comics was published in German by Panini Comics in 2016 .
