Matthew Donald Berninger , better known as Matt Berninger (born February 13, 1971 ) is the front man and singer of the American indie rock band The National . His voice is baritone .

Career

Matt Berninger graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati in 1989 . He then went on to study graphic design at the University of Cincinnati , where he met Scott Devendorf in 1991. They played together in the band Nancy before they moved to New York after graduating in 1996 , where they accepted positions as graphic designers. Together with Scott's brother Bryan Devendorf and Matt's childhood friends, the brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner, they founded the band The National in 1999 .

In 2015, Berninger founded the band EL VY together with former Menomena member Brent Knopf .

Private

Matt is married to Carin Besser, an editor at The New Yorker magazine who has worked on several The National songs, including “Brainy” from the Boxer album . They have a daughter together.
