The Berlin Music Commission eG (BMC) is a network of the Berlin music industry . It was founded in 2007 as a cooperative based in Berlin . Its members come from all areas of the music industry. Other networks of the Berlin creative industries are connected .

tasks

The business purpose is to represent and promote the small and medium-sized companies of the Berlin music industry in particular and to represent their interests vis-à-vis politics, business and society. The focus is on networking the Berlin players, in PR and lobbying work and in central marketing for Berlin as a music location.

Competence center music industry

The center of activities is the music industry competence center . In addition to networking and lobbying, members are offered offers for knowledge transfer, coaching and advice as well as the development of new solution models in four formats:

BMC backstage

Since 2009, the cooperative has been hosting the BMC Backstage networking event every two months . Under the motto "Music meets ...", this format focuses on networking with new players and branches of the creative economy (fashion, film, design, games, music, books, marketing, etc.) in order to make the economic potential visible and usable do. Each event has an industry segment in focus, and the venue changes accordingly. Three companies each show best practice in their previous cooperation with the music industry, structured networking then offers the opportunity to make new contacts.

nxtB: now

The nxtB: now series takes place once a month as a workTank (workshop and think tank) in the offices of the Berlin Music Commission. In small groups, explosive issues and challenges in the industry are discussed in order to then find solutions. In the past the topics included data protection, female executives, internationalization of music companies and copyright & metadata.

Consultation hours for the music industry

The Musikwirtschaft consultation hour is an open network format for exchange, advice and problem analysis. The monthly events offer support and know-how for the various activities in the music industry. An expert advises a small group of participants on specific topics. Past topics included GEMA and social media.

Most Wanted Music

The conference format Most Wanted: Music is the event for the professional music and creative industries in Berlin. The goals: Promote practical know-how, stimulate networking and exchange and develop new business models for the industry. In result-oriented workshops, panels and talks, MW: M #convention is dedicated to cutting-edge and exciting topics that concern the industry. In such a way that the participants get real added value. For yourself, your company and your daily work.

listen to berlin

Since 2008 the Berlin Music Commission has published an annual compilation entitled " listen to berlin ". With this sampler, young Berlin artists and producers with their innovative sound are presented to the specialist audience at international music fairs. In 2008 this compilation was released under the name "achtung music - new berlin talent", in 2009 "listen to berlin", in 2010 "listen to berlin 2010/11", which continues into the current year. The following artists and bands are represented on these compilations: Bonaparte , Daniel Haaksman , Mittekill, Torpedo Boyz , Kat Frankie , Norman Palm, Puppetmastaz , Cobra Killer , Brandt Brauer Frick , Bodi Bill , Frank Bretschneider and Me and My Drummer .

Development Unit and International Cooperation Unit

In order to sustainably strengthen Berlin as a music location and secure the future viability of the individual players in the long term, the existing Music Industry Competence Center was expanded to include two new fields of action at the beginning of 2016 with the support of the Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research: The International Cooperation Unit and Development Unit .

With the expansion of its radius of action, the branch network of the Berlin music industry would like to support small and medium-sized music companies in the areas of internationalization and strategic development as well as further expand the capital city's music location.

The core task of the International Cooperation Unit is to promote cooperation projects through the necessary transfer of know-how and to create strategic foundations in order to ensure international exchange and the international presence of Berlin music companies in the future.

The main task of the Development Unit is to support the activities of the International Cooperation Unit. The focus is on formulating concrete recommendations for action and intensifying the industry-specific transfer of knowledge as well as further specialization and networking of local actors with appropriate professionalization offers and solution models.

Past activities

Berlin Music Week

In 2010, a wide range of music-related events took place in the capital for the first time under this umbrella brand. The central hotspot was the former Berlin-Tempelhof Airport . The Berlin Music Commission was instrumental in initiating and organizing the Berlin Music Week . Olaf Kretschmar, board member and cluster manager of the Berlin Music Commission, was chairman of the organizing committee of the Berlin Music Week. Participants included Popkomm (470 exhibitors, 800 journalists, 7,500 visitors), the all2gethernow camp (253 speakers, 2,000 visitors), the Berlin Festival (30,000 visitors), Jazzkomm, the Kulturbrauerei (40 events with 12,000 visitors), ClubSpreeBerlin and finally the Berlin Club Night with 44 participating clubs.

U-tone

The U-TON project took place for the first time from September 6th to 12th, 2010. On the occasion of the Berlin Music Week, the Platz der Luftbrücke underground station at Tempelhof Airport became a presentation area for Berlin labels and music publishers. Over 500 labels have settled on the Spree and represent an exceptionally broad spectrum of sounds. Through their work, the labels and music publishers shape Berlin's status as an international music metropolis. The Platz der Luftbrücke underground station on the U6 served as a central traffic junction during Berlin Music Week, as it is located directly at Tempelhof Airport, the central hotspot of Berlin Music Week. Numerous visitors passed the southern entrance hall this week to get to Tempelhofer Feld. For one week, the southern entrance hall of the underground station was transformed into a public venue for the approx. 50 participating Berlin labels and music publishers. Music was played via a sound system and the visuals ran on the mobile screen (music videos, information about the labels and artists - each matched to the song being played). For the participating labels and artists, this meant increased presence at Berlin Music Week. But the non-professionals, festival visitors and passers-by also welcomed the unexpected action and lingered to experience the music and the station in a new way. The radio stations Motor FM and Kulturradio conducted on-site interviews and reported on the project.

Berlin-Brandenburg joint presentation at SXSW

In 2009, the BMC organized the Berlin-Brandenburg joint presentation for the first time at South by Southwest (SXSW) in the Texas city of Austin . With 12,000 trade visitors, SXSW is one of the most important music fairs in the world. The number of participating Berlin-Brandenburg companies rose from 12 in 2009 to 31 in 2012.

Research project "Value creation potentials and perspectives of the Berlin music industry"

In cooperation with the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and the Berlin University of the Arts , the Berlin Music Commission is developing a research study that can shed more light on Berlin as a music location and its local music companies and thus make creative work and economic success more transparent. A comprehensive empirical survey of all players in the music industry in Berlin as well as their value creation activities and their internal and external networking with other players is expected. In June 2011, the first central results of the research project "Value creation potentials and perspectives of the Berlin music industry" in relation to the " Europe 2020 " strategy were presented to the Berlin Music Commission by Carsten Winter and his team.

Germany goes three-dimensional

Germany goes 3dimensional (G3D) is a cooperation of the three most important German music locations Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne , represented by the Berlin Music Commission, Reeperbahnfestival (Hamburg) and c / o pop (Cologne). The initiative was formed in 2010 in order to pool interests and projects and to represent Germany as a music location, especially internationally, and to strengthen it with targeted activities. The first joint projects are planned for autumn 2011 in New York, during the "Eurosonic" in Groningen, at the " Midem " in Cannes and at the "SXSW" in Austin / Texas.

Music 2020 Berlin

The networks Label-Commission Berlin , Clubcommission Berlin and the BMC joined forces in 2011 for the Music 2020 Berlin campaign , which is aimed at Berlin politics in order to further develop the music location over the next 10 years. It all started with a campaign paper signed by around 400 music labels, technology providers, event organizers and clubs.

The aim of the campaign is to bundle the competencies of the individual players in order to improve and secure the infrastructure of the music industry, to research and promote the industry, and to market the location nationally and internationally. This will be followed by a motivational campaign and a panel discussion with the election campaigners for the Berlin Senate . The three policy fields of cultural policy , urban development and economic policy are particularly in focus. In order to develop Berlin as a job-creating music production location, the political decision-makers should commit to developing a cross-policy, location-specific strategy that is to be implemented with appropriate funding and investment instruments.

One of these central demands has already been achieved: the red-black coalition in the Berlin Senate is providing one million euros for the strategic development of Berlin as a music location. The new state government has thus kept its promise before the election to create a "Music Board" as a comprehensive forum. In the coalition negotiations, the CDU and SPD planned to strengthen the industry, drawing on suggestions from the music networks. The "Music Board" is to be located directly in the Senate Chancellery and will become the point of contact and the pacemaker for the music industry and scene in Berlin.
