Kat Frankie (born July 8, 1978 in Sydney ) is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist who has lived in Berlin since the end of 2004 .

Life

Kat Frankie grew up in the suburbs of Sydney. She started writing songs when she was around six years old. The Folk -Plattensammlung her mother influenced her musical development. Influenced by Simon & Garfunkel , Bread and Carly Simon , Frankie developed her love for folk melodies and pop ballads. She taught herself to play the guitar . Apart from a time in the school choir , she received no formal musical training, but attended the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales in Paddington.

Meanwhile inspired by role models like PJ Harvey and Fiona Apple , Kat Frankie made her first public appearance as a singer-songwriter in June 2002 at the Harp Hotel in Sydney. After a year as a soloist, she was accompanied by Tim Chamberlain (bass guitar) and Tim Marceau (drums) from June 2003. In December 2003 Frankie released her first CD , the EP Outside. Now. The recordings were made in August 2003 within three days at BJB Studios in Surry Hills / Sydney, with Scott Horscroft at the controls.

Despite various appearances in clubs and at festivals, the music remained a minor matter for Frankie during this time. Given the high cost level in Sydney, she could not imagine a musical career there. After studying design, she earned her living in an architecture office as an interior designer .

In December 2004 Kat Frankie moved to Berlin in search of creative impulses, initially intended as a year abroad. Due to the many opportunities to perform and the low rental prices, she was able to concentrate fully on the music there, so that her new home became a second home. With the first Berlin song "The Wrong Side of Midnight" she won a Jaxter Award for young Australian songwriters. In Berlin, Frankie found a kind of musical community that Sydney couldn't offer her, and in a short time she has become a fixture in the very lively singer-songwriter underground .

In 2006 the filmmaker Uli M. Schueppel portrayed this scene by accompanying Kat Frankie and six other musicians from all over the world with the camera through their adopted home Berlin-Kreuzberg . He asked each of them to write a song about Berlin. This is how Frankie's "The Faint-hearted Ones" came about. The film BerlinSong was shown for the first time in February 2007 at the 57th Berlinale and later also at several other film festivals . The German theatrical release was on September 4, 2008, but was limited to a small group of arthouse cinemas . ( BerlinSong was released on DVD in September 2009. )

In Berlin, Frankie also met her fellow countryman Simon Ayton from Melbourne , who was at her side as a producer and drummer while working on her debut album Pocketknife , which was completed in the summer of 2006. In February 2007 the single "The Tops" was released in the iTunes Store . In August 2007 the single "Serves You Right for Using Violence" followed. The album Pocketknife was released in Australia in early September 2007. In Germany it has been available from online music services since November 2007 and on CD since January 2008.

In May 2010 Kat Frankie finished work on her second album The Dance of a Stranger Heart and founded the independent label cellphan . The release under her own label took place on September 3, 2010. While working on this album, she began to experiment a cappella with a loop pedal by layering her own vocal phrases one after the other to form a polyphonic choir. She has also used this arrangement method for live performances. This is how the album title "Born Clever" came about, as well as the single "Women leave", which was released on October 14, 2011 worldwide via online music services.

From March to November 2015 she was on tour with Olli Schulz for his album Feelings aus der Asche , on which she also sang. Furthermore, the title music "When You're Near to Me" for the talk show Schulz and Böhmermann was created from a collaboration between Frankie and Get Well Soon . Together with the Cologne musician Chris Klopfer, she is also the duo KEØMA . In 2016 they took part in the competition Our Song for Stockholm with the title "Protected" .

Her album Bad Behavior , released in 2018, is presented by Frankie as part of her own tour of Germany in March and April of the same year. Numerous festival appearances have been announced for summer 2018.
