ORWOhaus
The ORWOhaus in the Marzahn district of Berlin is a seven-storey former industrial building. It was built in the 1980s and served as a production facility for the film maker ORWO until the political changes in 1989 . The ORWOhaus is located between Landsberger Allee and Frank-Zappa-Straße .
Today the ORWOhaus is a member of the cooperation network of the Berlin music industry Berlin Music Commission and is used as a rehearsal room for musicians.
history
In 1990 the house became part of the Treuhandliegenschaftsgesellschaft (TLG) portfolio . Since no buyer could be found, the premises were used as storage space by smaller companies after years of vacancy. In addition, young bands started renting in 1994 because the house was ideal for rehearsals due to its remote location.
In the spring of 2004, the building authorities discovered serious fire protection deficiencies, whereupon the owner terminated all leases in June 2004. By this time around 400 musicians had found a permanent place to rehearse in the ORWOhaus and did not want to accept the closure without a fight. In the past six years, many bands had already set up their rooms at great expense and built in recording studios. Loud protests (such as the occupation of Landsberger Allee during the morning rush hour) and occasional squatting, they drew the interest of the Berlin public. With the support of the press and politics, the closure of the ORWOhaus was prevented. The then Berlin Senator for Culture Thomas Flierl negotiated personally with TLG and achieved a six-month transition phase in which the self-administration of the house by the musicians could be tackled and a comprehensive operating and financing concept developed.
On April 30, 2005, only ten months after the termination, the specially founded ORWOhaus e. V. finally the purchase contract, which was renegotiated at the end of May 2006 and was finally confirmed by a financially feasible amount of money.
After receiving non-profit status (at the beginning of 2006), a grant from lottery funds and the award for the “Place of Ideas” - from the federal competition “ Germany - Land of Ideas ” - the ORWOhaus project is a publicly recognized institution and can express its visions as Realize music factory through investments. The ORWOhaus e. V. has seven permanent employees in 2011 and finances itself completely independently.
The first ORWOhaus festival took place in July 2006 and is repeated annually in July. A highlight was the renaming of the former Straße 13 to Frank-Zappa-Straße in July 2007 on the initiative of the ORWO association , which reminds us of the world-famous musician Frank Zappa .
At the beginning of August 2019, the Resist to Exist Festival took place in the ORWOhaus , because legal obstacles prevented it from taking place in Kremmen , Upper Bavaria , as it had in the past three years .
Event spaces
Thanks to funding from the Deutsche Klassenlotterie Foundation in 2017, the ground floor of the ORWOhaus could be upgraded in terms of fire protection .
