Dear Reader is an indie pop band from Johannesburg , South Africa . It was founded in 2006 by singer and songwriter Cherilyn MacNeil and producer and bassist Darryl Torr and has been a solo project by Cherilyn MacNeil since 2010.

history

In August 2006 MacNeil and Torr released their first album The Younger on the South African record company Just Music . The album was released under the band name Harris Tweed . In 2008 the band changed their name to Dear Reader, after the Scottish textile company Harris-Tweed objected.

In 2008, MacNeil and Torr recorded their first album called Dear Reader, entitled Replace Why with Funny . It was produced by Brent Knopf ( Menomena , Ramona Falls ). Soon after, they signed a record deal with the Berlin indie label City Slang and released their album Replace Why with Funny in February 2009. In Europe it was released by City Slang and in South Africa by Just Music .

In 2010 Replace Why with Funny won an award for Best English Adult Contemporary Album at the South African Music Awards .

In 2010, MacNeil and Torr separated amicably and MacNeil settled in Berlin, where she wrote songs for the next Dear Reader album, Idealistic Animals . The album was recorded again in collaboration with Brent Knopf and various other friends and musicians in Leipzig and Portland.

Idealistic Animals was published in Germany and South Africa in September 2011. In the rest of Europe, it was released in November 2011.
