Flumet is a commune of 810 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Ugine in the arrondissement of Albertville .

geography

Flumet is located in the Arly valley , about 52 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva and 55 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry (both as the crow flies). The historic center is located at 906  m on a ridge between the Arly and its largest tributary, the Arrondine , just before its mouth. In the southwest, the two rivers form the municipal boundary. The Massif des Aravis begins to the west of the village , on which Tête du Torraz, the 1930  m high mountain, is the highest point in the municipality. The Massif du Beaufortain rises to the east . In a south-westerly direction the Arly drains the valley and after 14 kilometers you reach the capital of the canton Ugine and after 22 kilometers the city of Albertville .

The neighboring communities are La Giettaz in the north, Praz-sur-Arly in the east in the neighboring department of Haute-Savoie , Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe in the south and Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle in the west. The municipality also includes several hamlets and settlements, which are mainly located on the sun-exposed northern slope of the Arly valley:

  • Les Pontets-Morettes (around 1000  m )
  • La Cour ( 1000  m )
  • la Fougère ( 1137  m )
  • La Touvière (about 1150  m )
  • La Cry (approx. 1200  m )
  • Sciozier (around 1300  m )

Down the valley there is another hamlet called Flumet d'Aval , which is located in the municipality of Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle.

population

With 810 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Flumet is one of the small communities in Savoy. There have been only minor fluctuations in the population over the past two centuries. The local residents of Flumet are called Flumeran (e) s in French .

history

From around 1100 the lords of Faucigny built the rock of Flumet, protected by the Arly and Arrondine rivers, into a strategically important fortress in the Arly valley. In 1228 Flumet received extensive rights to jurisdiction, trade and agricultural production, which were to strengthen the economy in the remote location. Even under the rule of Savoy after the Treaty of Paris (1355) , these rights continued to exist.

A devastating fire in 1679 destroyed the village and the castle in its center. After Flumet's location was no longer of great strategic importance long before the fire because the Faucigny was annexed to Savoy, the Lords of Savoy agreed to abandon the castle and use it as a quarry to rebuild the village.

At the beginning of the coalition wars during the French Revolution , French troops occupied Savoy on September 22, 1792. The villages in Savoy were particularly affected by the so-called de - Christianization , with which the revolutionaries wanted to break the power of the Roman Catholic Church and oust the Christian faith from public life. In Flumet, this resulted in the bell tower of the Saint Théodule church being destroyed. The now integrated into France Savoy was first named Département Mont-Blanc , but was then reorganized after the conquest of Geneva in 1798, so that Flumet joined the Département du Léman together with the north of Savoy . Restored in 1814 as part of the Kingdom of Sardinia , Savoy was finally incorporated into France in 1860 and two departments were created again, but this time Flumet belonged to the more southern of the two ( Savoie department ). Winter sports in Flumet began in the 1963/64 season with the opening of the Teleski des Seigneurs pole lift . The construction of a chair lift expanded the ski area in 1971. Both lifts are still in operation today (as of 2012).

Origin of name

The name Flumet comes from the Latin word flumen (river), where the diminutive -et refers to the location on the upper reaches of the Arly. The place was mentioned in the Middle Ages as ad nantum de Flumeto (1290) and Castellania et mandamentum Flumeti (1444).

Culture and sights

Of the medieval fortifications in Flumet, only one of the permanent houses remains, that of the Comtes de Bieu from the 15th century. The location of the castle, which was demolished after the fire in 1679, is only recognizable from some of the foundation walls.

The village church of Saint Théodule is named after St. Theodor , Bishop of Octodurus (Martigny) . It was built in 1682 on the ruins of a previous building that had been destroyed by fire. From the first church building, the massive bell tower made of carved stone and the north facade are still preserved, both of which were originally part of the defensive wall from the 12th century and therefore give the church an appearance that is atypical for the region. The church is divided into a central nave and a single, low aisle on the left. The back wall of the altar shows Saint Theodore and is one of the very few in Savoy that is covered by a canopy .

Other historical buildings are related to the Arly River. The Pont de l'Abîme bridge, built in 1878, crosses the river at a height of 30 m and connects the town with the neighboring municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe . Several water mills used water power to grind grain. The Moulin à Tienne , which was first mentioned in 1730 and worked until 1973, and the Moulin des Seigneurs , which is still working today in a modernized form, are still preserved today.

Economy and Infrastructure

The wooded slopes and mountain pastures around Flumet are cultivated by about 30 farms. Regional cheeses are produced as an essential product of agriculture, namely Reblochon and Beaufort , whose protected designations of origin overlap in the Flumet area. The Arly Valley Farmers' Cooperative is headquartered in Flumet. Although tourism means that the proportion of second homes and holiday homes is high at 59%, it does not create jobs to the same extent as in neighboring communities. There is only one small hotel and a campsite in Flumet and the part of the ski area belonging to Flumet has only a few lifts.

traffic

The upper Arly Valley is still off the main regional arteries and railway lines. The D1212 (formerly national road 212), which connects the Arve Valley via Megève in the north with the Isère Valley and Albertville in the south, runs through the valley and through the center of Flumet . It is crossed by another road in Flumet, which opens up the neighboring communities of La Giettaz (D909) and Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe (D218b). This road, which runs across the high alpine valleys, is a section of the approximately 700 km long Route des Grandes Alpes , which climbs from here to the Col des Aravis in the north and Col des Saisies in the south. It is particularly popular with tourists and cyclists.

The nearest possible motorway connections are the A430 (Albertville exit, 15 miles away) and the A40 (exits 20 to 22, around 25 km away). The Albertville SNCF train station is suitable for reaching Flumet by bus. Airports in the region are Geneva (78 km), Chambéry-Savoie (95 km) and Lyon-St-Exupéry (160 km).

education

In Flumet there is a state école primaire , d. H. a primary school with an attached école maternelle (kindergarten).

Sports

Since 1911 , the mountain stages of the Tour de France regularly lead over the Col des Aravis or the Col des Saisies or both, so that the riders then inevitably also drive through the town.

Flumet has a number of ski slopes and lifts that open up the northern slopes of Mont Reguet and Roc des Evettes on the opposite side of the Arly Valley up to around 1600 m. They are operated by the Labellemontagne investor group and are part of the Espace Diamant ski area , which encompasses the entire mountain range between the Arly and Doron valleys .

Personalities

  • Roger Rossat-Mignod , French ski racer in the Alpine Ski World Cup 1967–1973, was born in the village.
  • Raphaël Burtin , French ski racer in the Alpine Ski World Cup 1995-2009, had his home club in Flumet during his active time and also lived there.
