Grignon is a French commune with 2,119 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Albertville-2 in the Albertville arrondissement .

geography

location

Grignon is located at an altitude of 328  m on the Isère River , about 37 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry , 64 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Geneva and 73 kilometers northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). Neighboring communities of Grignon are Albertville in the north, Esserts-Blay in the east, Monthion in the south and Gilly-sur-Isère in the north-west.

topography

The 9.29 km 2 municipal area covers a section in the middle Isère Valley on the left bank of the river, opposite the city of Albertville . The river forms the northern boundary of the municipality for about two kilometers and swings in this area to the opposite side of a wide alluvial plain, so that space is created for the main settlement area of Grignon. At the edge of this plain, the communal soil rises abruptly and includes the valley flank up to an elevation of 1661  m in the northern foothills of the Grand Arc , the northernmost peak of the Vanoise Mountains . The ridge of this northern foothills forms the eastern boundary of the municipality. With the almost completely wooded valley flank, the community has a forest share of 81.4%, proportionally followed by 10.4% areas with residential development. Agriculturally used soil only plays a subordinate role at 5.2%.

The village of Grignon and the neighboring municipality of Monthion to the west form a continuous settlement area. The part bordering Monthion is called Neveau le bas , including the hamlet Neveau le haut (around 380  m ) in the lower part of the valley flank, which is somewhat flatter here. Saint-Guérin ( 524  m ) is also located above the actual village center .

history

Grignon village church

The place appears in the Middle Ages for the first time in 1245 as an indication of the origin of a person ( Johannes sacerdos de Grinon ). The straightening and embankment of the Isère in the 18th and 19th centuries made larger areas of the valley floor arable and enabled today's settlement.

With 2119 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Grignon is one of the medium-sized communities in the Savoie department. After the population had been stable at around 400 during the 19th and 20th centuries, the population began to rise sharply in the 1960s. This is due to the urbanization of Albertville, which made Grignon a suburb of this city. The local residents of Grignon are called Grignolain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Grignon was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. Above all, the village has developed into a residential community whose workers go about their work in the larger localities in the area, especially in the Albertville area.

The department road D925 runs through the village and opens up from Albertville to the villages downstream on the left bank of the Isère. In the northern neighboring communities there are connections to the regional infrastructure in the Isère Valley, namely to the A430 motorway and the Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway line with a train station in Albertville. Chambéry-Savoie (distance 60 km) and Geneva (94 km) are possible airports in the region .

education

In Grignon there is a pre-school ( école maternelle ) and a primary school ( école primaire ).
