topography

The area of the 22.45 km 2 municipality stretches from the middle of the Isère valley, on the right edge of which the town center is located, up to the high mountains of the Beaufortain massif with elevations well over 2000  m . The La Bâthie valley section is bordered by two small mountain tributaries of the Isère, the Nant Varin in the north and Bénétant in the south. The municipality floor reaches its highest point on the 2460  m high Pointe de la Grande Journée . This means that large parts of the municipality extend beyond the tree line , which is around 1800 m here . Overall, the proportion of forest in the municipal area is 57.3%, that with grass and low vegetation is 15.7%, rock and snow areas are 8.3%.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, La Bâthie also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Biorges ( 600  m ) on a slope on the northern edge of the municipality,
  • Saint-Didier ( 380  m ) on the edge of the valley near the Château de Chantemerle ,
  • Arbine ( 384  m ) south and subsequently from La Bâthie,
  • Langon ( 377  m ) on the southern edge of the municipality.

history

The Tarantaise was settled by the Celtic people of the Ceutrons before Roman times. The hamlet of Arbine , along with Tours-en-Savoie, is one of the two possible locations for the Roman Obilonna or Obilinum , which is recorded on the Tabula Peutingeriana .

La Bâthie first appeared in the Middle Ages in 1287 in the documents under Actum apud Bastiam in castro , the name denotes a fortified settlement built out of the ground. For a long time it was the residence of an archbishop, as such the place was mentioned in a document in 1324 ( Apud Bastiam in castro in camera domini archiepiscopi ). In the 16th and 18th centuries the place wrote itself La Bastie and La Bastie-en-Tarentaise . The current spelling with "h" is unusual in comparison with similar-sounding places in France and did not gain acceptance until the 19th century. The hamlet of Arbine was first mentioned in medieval documents in 1347 in connection with mills (Les moulins d'Ablonaz) .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Bâthie was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are predominantly local small business and medium-sized businesses. In addition, the village has also developed into a residential community, around two thirds of which work in the larger towns in the area.

A hydroelectric power station has been generating electrical energy on the northern edge of the municipality since 1961. It is connected via a pressure line to the Roselend Dam , which is 15 km away (as the crow flies) and 1200 m higher , which together with the Gittaz Dam and the Saint-Guérin Dam forms a common storage area in the Beaufortain. The power plant works with six Pelton turbines and generates around one billion kWh annually with a maximum output of 550 MW. After passing through the turbine, the water is discharged to the Isère via a canal.

The N90 crosses as a major route of the Tarentaise the municipal area and opens it to a connection point. The N90 merges into the A430 motorway down the valley at Albertville . A bridge over the Isère connects the place with Esserts-Blay. The Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny – Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway also runs through the Isère Valley and has a larger train station in Albertville. Chambéry-Savoie (distance 67 km) and Geneva (100 km) are possible airports in the region .

education

La Bâthie has a pre-school ( école maternelle ) and a primary school ( école primaire ).
