Marianne Dissard (born May 20, 1969 in Tarbes ) is a French-American chanson singer , songwriter and filmmaker. In terms of personnel, the artist is part of the Tucson music scene around the bands Giant Sand and Calexico , with whom she works closely.

biography

The later documentary filmmaker and musician left her home in southern France relatively early. Due to a career transfer of the father, the family moved to Phoenix in the US state of Arizona in 1985 . In 1989 Marianne Dissard began studying film in Los Angeles . Immediately before moving to California, she met leader Howe Gelb at a concert by the band Giant Sand . Yellow offered her temporary living in his Hollywood apartment . During her studies Dissard worked on several film projects, including in her original home country France .

The acquaintance with Gelb and the musicians of Giant Sand also proved useful professionally. In 1994 she made a documentary about the band in Tucson called Drunken Bees. Dissard got stuck in Tucson; In the following years she became friends more and more with the musicians of the Giant Sand offshoot Calexico - especially with their founding member and guitarist Joey Burns . In this environment she also met her future husband Naim Amor, for whose band Amor Belhom Duo she wrote several songs. The first musical release was a guest appearance in the Calexico hit The Ballad of Cable Hogue in 2000. Dissard also gave a guest appearance in the accompanying video clip .

Although Marianne Dissard does not play an instrument herself, she subsequently made a name for herself more and more as a songwriter and musician. In the run-up to the US presidential election in 2004, she formed a women's band called the Tucson Suffragettes. The aim of the band: to mobilize voters to prevent a second term of George W. Bush . She received support from established artists such as country singer Linda Ronstadt . In the course of her work as a songwriter, the Frenchwoman also worked with the Calexico side project ABBC and the French neo-chanson interpreter Françoiz Breut .

In 2008 Dissard finally made the change from songwriter to musician: Her first album was released - initially as a demo version with various recording sessions, then as a regular CD. Guest musicians on the album L'entredeux were different musicians from the Calexico environment. L'entredeux, a record with 12 titles sung in French, generally received good reviews - including from the German music magazine Spex. In 2008 and 2009 Marianne Dissard performed more often in Germany - partly in collaboration with the Le Pop label and in a double pack with other artists of the current neo-chanson such as Françoiz Breut. With Paris One Takes, a live recorded CD, another compilation of the song repertoire was released in 2010, which could also be heard on L'entredeux . The second regular studio album, L'abandon, came out in February 2011. With two exceptions, it also contained French-language pieces with different styles.

Style and reviews

The mixture of French neochanson and so-called desert rock was particularly well received on Dissard's debut. Among other things, the album also contains the track Les draps sourds with a catchy Sinti guitar , for which there is also a video clip, as well as slower songs such as La Cayenne and Sans Facon , mainly recorded with acoustic guitar . The music magazine Spex characterized the musical mix as follows: “Of course, the Americana song is implemented in her chansons as if by her own hand. But the songs are also characterized by the invisible, yet quasi-visual element. ” The lyrics also met with a positive response from the Spex editorial team: “ And so a voice sings about love with little broken chanson seriousness Love and love and now and then about bizarre things like one-night stands and fuck sessions interrupted by pets. "

The Wiener Zeitung wrote: “Accordion and guitar, strings and harmonica combine very unobtrusively to form a transatlantic mélange. The French of the lyrics and the occasionally dull voice of Dissard gently lay over this remarkable mix of styles, which has fine surprises in store in each of the twelve songs. Dissard expressed herself differently about her own style. She described her music to the magazine Kulturnews as Desert Chanson. In another interview she questioned the meaning of genre assignments: “What do you think people say when I sing in English? At the moment they call me a chanson singer. But if I were to sing in English, I'd just be the American indie singer, something like that. That's pigeonhole thinking. ” On her website, she calls herself a Tucson Chanteuse.
