Giant Sand is an American rock band led by Howe Yellow from Tucson , Arizona . In her music she combined rock music with country and Americana .

Band history

The band was founded in 1980 by Howe Gelb (* 1956) as Giant Sandworms and was based in Los Angeles for a long time . The members of the band changed over the years. a. Long-time band members were John Convertino (drums) and Joey Burns (bass), who later founded Calexico . Continued to play Chris Cacavas (from Green on Red ), Paula Jean Brown ( Go-Go's ) and Tom Larkins (later Jonathan Richman ) in the band. Guest artists included Victoria Williams , Neko Case , Juliana Hatfield , PJ Harvey , John Parish, Vic Chesnutt , Steve Wynn , Vicki Peterson , Rainer Ptacek and almost all members of the band Poi Dog Pondering . Yellow and Brown's daughter, Indiosa Patsy Jean, can also be heard regularly on records.

Yellow releases solo albums at regular intervals. Other side projects are The Band of Blacky Ranchette , OP8 (in collaboration with Lisa Germano ). On the albums of the Band of Blacky Ranchette , guests u. a. Lucinda Williams , Kurt Wagner (from Lambchop ) and Cat Power .

The rock opera Tucson , released in 2012 under the name Giant Giant Sand , was the first album by the band to hit the charts in the “ Independent - Newcomer ” category .

In 2016, Gelb temporarily announced Giant Sand's farewell tour. In 2018 he re-recorded the 1985 debut album as Returns to Valley of Rain with the original line-up of the band and continued to play concerts with Giant Sand.
