Cat Power (born January 21, 1972 as Charlyn Marie "Chan" [ ʃɑːn ] Marshall in Atlanta ) is an American musician and songwriter of alternative country . She appears solo or with changing accompanists.

biography

Marshall grew up as a child of separated hippie parents in the southern United States . Her father was a musician but disapproved of his daughter's musical ambitions. She left high school without a degree. With Glen Thrasher and Mark Moore, she founded the band Cat Power in Atlanta. She then moved to New York City . When she opened for Liz Phair in 1994 , she met Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar. These encouraged her to record and were guest musicians on her first two albums, Dear Sir (1995) and Myra Lee (1996). In 1996 she got a contract with Matador , where her third album What Would the Community Think was released, which includes the song Nude as the News .

The 1998 album Moon Pix was recorded in Australia . There are u. a. Mick Turner and Jim White from the band Dirty Three can be heard as backing musicians. With this album and the single Cross Bones Style, she consolidated her status with critics and fans. During these years Marshall toured the world, where she mostly played in smaller but often sold out clubs. In 2000 she released the album The Covers Record with selected cover songs and only one piece of her own. The recordings came from different sessions over the previous two years. She only published new material of her own in 2003 on You Are Free . Guest musicians here included Eddie Vedder , Dave Grohl and Warren Ellis from Dirty Three. Marshall cited Gus Van Sant's film Good Will Hunting (1997) as an inspiration for the album .

In 2004 the DVD Speaking for Trees was released . It contains almost two hours of footage showing Marshall making music in a forest. The accompanying audio CD includes the 18-minute song Willie Deadwilder , for which she is accompanied on guitar by M. Ward . In June 2005 Marshall performed in London at the Meltdown Festival curated by Patti Smith . The album The Greatest was released in January 2006. Chan Marshall went to Memphis for the recordings and, among others, involved Al Green's guitarist Teenie Hodges in the production of the recordings. Unlike its often meager predecessors, the album is very generously orchestrated. In addition to piano and guitar, horns, saxophone or country instruments are used in many of the songs .

Because of alcohol abuse and psychological problems, she was repeatedly in clinical treatment and therefore canceled the US tour planned for the publication of The Greatest in 2006 . In the same year she returned to the US stages with several festival appearances, and in spring 2007 she toured Western Europe. In 2006/2007 she worked on the Wong Kar Wai film My Blueberry Nights . She provided music for the soundtrack (the songs Living Proof and The Greatest from the album of the same name) and acted as an actress.

The album Jukebox , released in 2008, contains two Chan Marshall compositions, Metal Heart and Song to Bobby ; the other eleven songs are idiosyncratic cover versions of songs such as B. New York (made famous by Frank Sinatra ), I Believe in You ( Bob Dylan ), Blue ( Joni Mitchell ) and Ramblin 'Woman ( Hank Williams ).

style

Marshall's music is mostly minimalist, with sparing guitar and piano sounds, it accompanies itself, often supported by a violin, drums or other instruments. Their singing is in the tradition of folk , blues and country of the southern states. Some concerts contain larger phases of improvising music.

Collaboration with other musicians

2004 Marshall was on the album White People of Handsome Boy Modeling School to hear, as she worked with Howe Gelb of Giant Sand with his side project The Band of Blacky Ranchette together. She can also be seen in the The Flaming Lips documentary The Fearless Freaks . She can also be heard in the film V for Vendetta , and also on the film's soundtrack with the song I Found a Reason . Her song Werewolf from the album You Are Free is also part of the soundtrack of the film Torn Hugs by Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar . Furthermore, "Cat Power" appeared in the opening act on the "LA to the Moon" world tour by Lana del Rey.
