Midlake is an American alternative rock band from Denton , Texas .

Band history

Midlake was founded by a group of jazz students from the University of North Texas . The original line-up consisted of Tim Smith, McKenzie Smith, Paul Alexander, Eric Nichelson, and Evan Jacobs. Her first musical attempts took place under the band name The Cornbread All-Stars and consisted of funk and jazz improvisations, which were very influenced by Herbie Hancock .

After the radio wave subsided, the band decided to move closer to pop music. Tim Smith began composing songs that were influenced by bands like Radiohead , Travis, and Grandaddy . It was around this time that Evan Jacobs decided to move to Austin to re-orientate himself musically. Eric Nichelson took over his part on the keyboard.

Jason Upshaw, a friend of the band, joined the group and did some guitar parts. The recordings of material from this period, referred to as The Panhandle Sessions , were never released as the band believed they had developed beyond the material. Jason Upshaw was soon replaced by Eric Pulido, a long-time friend of the drummer McKenzie Smith, so that the current line-up was found. Jason Upshaw stayed with the band as manager and press photographer. Most of the band's recordings are from him. In 2001 the band released their first EP with Milkmaid Grand Army , which was limited to 1000 copies.

In 2004 the British label Bella Union signed the band and released their debut album Bamnan and Slivercork , which was recorded in their hometown of Denton, Texas and mixed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios . The band combined Low Fidelity with Psychedelic Rock on the album . The second publication for Bella Union followed in 2006: The Trials of Van Occupanther . This recording continues a journey of self-discovery with tones that leads back to the sounds of the 70s and is significantly influenced by Fleetwood Mac under Lindsey Buckingham . Now the band became popular in Europe and played at festivals like Les Inrockuptibles and Wintercase . In response to the band's growing popularity, a few EPs with extracts and remixes were released in 2006. The first Milkmaid Grand Army was also reissued. In 2007 Midlake went on an extensive tour through the USA and Europe, which also brought her to Germany.

After the success of the Occupanther album, the band tried to record new songs in the following time. But due to the great pressure of expectation, the work on the new songs turned out to be more difficult than expected. The band didn't want to record a copy of their successful album, instead they tried to find a new sound and a different mood. At the end of January 2010, after almost four years of projecting, the new album The Courage of Others was released , in its entirety a rather dark, psychedelic and conceptual album.

Tim Smith left Midlake in November 2012. The rest of the band then wrote new songs and in 2013 released the album Antiphon .
