Grandaddy
Grandaddy is a rock band from Modesto , California , USA .
Band history
The band was formed in 1992 by Jason Lytle ( singer , guitarist , keyboardist ), Kevin Garcia ( bassist ) and Aaron Burtch ( drummer ). In 1995 guitarist Jim Fairchild and keyboardist Tim Dryden joined them. From 1992 to 1997 the band released three albums and one live album, all of which were recorded by the band itself and only sold on cassette in small numbers.
The turning point came in 1997 with their first studio album Under The Western Freeway , which was released by Will Records and distributed by V2 Records . The record received critical acclaim, with Pitchfork Media calling it the new kings of lo-fi .
The musical style of the band is based on the use of both guitars in indie rock style and the keyboards in a minimalist style reminiscent of Philip Glass . The lyrics mostly revolve around the subject of "isolation in a high-tech world", often from the perspective of rural America. This combination gives the mostly bearded band members a slight geek image.
The title AM 180 is part of the soundtrack of the horror film 28 Days Later .
After more than ten years of creative breaks and various individual projects by the band members, the album Last Place was released in March 2017.
Kevin Garcia died on May 2, 2017 at the age of 41 of complications from a stroke.
