Scott Pilgrim against the rest of the world (Original: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ) is the American - British - Japanese - Canadian film adaptation of the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley about the young Scott Pilgrim and his fight against the seven ex-lovers of his girlfriend Ramona Flowers. Directed by Edgar Wright and Michael Cera played the leading role.

action

Scott Pilgrim, 22, lives in Toronto and is bassist for Sex Bob-omb . He recently started dating the 17-year-old student Knives Chau. In a dream he meets a girl whom he later sees in the library. At a party he learns that her name is Ramona Flowers, that she works at Amazon and that she moved from New York to break up with her ex-boyfriend Gideon. Scott approaches her, but the conversation is unsuccessful.

The next day, Scott orders something from Amazon. He receives an e-mail in which the sender speaks of killing him, but finds it boring and deletes it. When Ramona delivers the package to him the next morning, Scott makes an appointment with her. After the date, he stays with Ramona and invites her to a band contest in which Sex Bob-omb is registered. This is where Ramona gets to know Knives. During the performance, Matthew Patel, Ramona's first diabolical ex-lover who sent him the email, appears and attacks Scott. After Scott defeats him video game style, Ramona explains that he must defeat seven devilish ex-lovers to be with her.

On the advice of his gay roommate Wallace, Scott ends his relationship with Knives. After an evening date with Ramona, they both go to the set where skateboarder Lucas Lee is shooting a movie. It turns out that Lucas is Ramona's second diabolical ex. Scott defeats Lucas by inciting him to do a skateboarding stunt that Lucas doesn't survive. The next morning he meets his ex-girlfriend Envy and she invites him to her band Clash at Demonhead . Envy had left Scott for her bassist Todd. He didn't intend to go, but his band leader has already agreed to support the band. During the concert, Ramona recognizes Todd as her third diabolical ex-lover. Scott can't compete against his vegan superpowers, but he manages to outsmart Todd and give him a coffee with milk. When the vegan police show up and drain Todd of his skills, Scott can easily defeat him.

At the after-show party, Scott is attacked by Roxy, the fourth devilish ex-girlfriend. This time Ramona helps him so that Scott survives this fight as well. Afterwards, Scott and Ramona quarrel because he wants a list of their ex-lovers. Ramona leaves, but leaves him the list. The next two ex-lovers are the Katayanagi twins, who happen to be the next opponents in the knockout round in the band contest. Ramona is also present at the concert, accompanied by Gideon. This is the seventh diabolical ex-lover and at the same time the organizer of the competition. The Sex Bob-ombs beat the twins and Scott gets an extra life. After the concert, Ramona breaks up with Scott because she is back with Gideon. He signs the Sex Bob-ombs. Scott leaves the band and Young Neil takes over bass.

In his shared apartment, Scott receives a call from Gideon and an invitation to the Chaostheater that he has just opened. Once there, he challenges Gideon to fight for Ramona. During the fight, Knives interferes and attacks Ramona. Scott intervenes and has to admit that he cheated on both of them. Gideon then kills him. In the afterlife he speaks to Ramona and realizes his mistakes. With the extra life he returns to the point in time when he went to the chaos theater. He reconciles with his friends and challenges Gideon. This time, however, he is not fighting for Ramona, but for himself. When Knives shows up, Scott willingly admits that he has cheated on her. Scott is initially defeated by Gideon, but he receives support from Knives and together they defeat Gideon. After the victory, Nega Scott appears, his negative version. But instead of fighting against him, Scott speaks to him and they both get along well. After leaving the theater, Ramona leaves and leaves Knives to Scott. This, however, lets Scott go, so that he and Ramona finally get together.

Bryan Lee O'Malley

After Bryan Lee O'Malley finished the first edition of Scott Pilgrim , his publisher Oni Press contacted producer Marc E. Platt for a film adaptation. Universal Studios spoke to Edgar Wright, who had just shot Shaun of the Dead to direct the Scott Pilgrim comics. O'Malley initially had mixed feelings about a film adaptation: “I assumed they'd make a big action comedy out of it, with actors I hate ... I didn't care. I was a poor artist and I said, 'Please just give me the money.' "

In May 2005 the studio commissioned Michael Bacall to write a script. Actors were cast until January 2009 and the film title was based on Scott Pilgrim vs. the world .

O'Malley confirmed that no material from Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour , the sixth Scott Pilgrim book, will be featured in the film as production had already begun. While giving ideas and suggestions regarding the film's ending, he admitted that some of these plans will change over time and that they will end their own. O'Malley gave Wright and Bacall his notes for the sixth book while filming.

Casting

Edgar Wright

Director Edgar Wright was very pleased with the casting for the film: “Just like with Hot Fuzz , we have great people in every role. The great thing is that there are well-known actors like Michael [Cera] and Jason [Schwartzman], up-and-coming actors like Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza and Brie Larson, and completely unknown ones. Universal never put pressure on me to cast famous people because, in a way, Michael [Cera] was in two $ 100 million films, and so did many of the others. Even though they don't have the biggest names, people know who they are. ”Wright was planning with Michael Cera while writing Hot Fuzz after watching a few episodes of Arrested Development . Wright said he needed an actor that viewers will still follow even if he acts like an ass. Edgar Wright made all casting decisions with O'Malley. Two years before shooting began, Wright had decided on Mary Elizabeth Winstead for the role of Ramona Flowers: “She has a very sunny disposition as a person, so it was very interesting how you could get her to play a version of herself, the is broken inside. She's great in the movie because she creates a lot of chaos while remaining supernaturally sensible. ”Ellen Wong auditioned three times for the role of Knives Chau. At the second audition, Edgar Wright was surprised to learn that she had a green belt in taekwondo .

Filming

Filming began in Toronto, Canada in March 2009 and ended in August.

music

Nigel Godrich , Beck , Metric , Broken Social Scene , Cornelius , Dan the Automator and Kid Koala are featured on the official soundtrack. Two unreleased songs by Beck (who also composed the music for Sex Bob-omb in the film) can be heard in the teaser trailer . Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene wrote all of the songs for Crash and the Boys. The songs were sung by Erik Knudson, who plays Crash in the film. Drew stated that he knew Knudson doesn't have to be a singer since the songs are so fast-paced and punk and it had to be the character's voice. Metric are the influence for the band Clash at Demonhead in the film and wrote the song Black Sheep for it. Metric singer Emily Haines' attire served as the base for the Clash at Demonhead singer. Chris Murphy of the band Sloan was the guitar coach for the actors. Music from the video game series The Legend of Zelda is used in a dream sequence in the film. To get permission for its use, Edgar Wright sent a clip from the film with a letter to Nintendo , describing the music as "the nursery rhyme of this generation."

reception

After a test screening, director Kevin Smith was very impressed with the film: “This film is great. It's captivating, people will see their blue miracle. […] He [Edgar Wright] brings a comic book to life. ”Smith also said that colleagues Quentin Tarantino and Jason Reitman loved the film.

After showing at Comic-Con in San Diego , the film received mixed reviews. Variety saw the film as "an example of attention-deficit filmmaking, both the best and the most frustrating" and that "anyone over 25 will likely find director Edgar Wright's adaptation of the cult graphic novel tiring, like playing a supervisor at a party sex-obsessed college kids. " The Hollywood Reporter wrote a negative review:" What is disappointing is that everything is so childish. Nothing really makes sense ... [Michael] Cera doesn't deliver a performance that anchors the nonsense [...] Universal should land a youth hit in the domestic market when the film comes out next month. A larger target group of older or international viewers is unlikely. ” IGN gave the film a positive rating with 8 out of 10 points and wrote that the film was funny and unusual. “[The movie is] best for the connected generation and those who grew up with Nintendo and MTV . Its kinetic nature and bizarre delicacy could be off-putting to some. "

“Like Spaced on Adrenaline, the film manages the balancing act of telling a warm, touching love story and at the same time unleashing a gigantic action spectacle that more than does justice to the comic model. The cast is spot-on and Michael Cera is convincing both in his usual awkward geek mode and as an action hero with surprising oomph. "

Scott Pilgrim played against the rest of the world on the first weekend in the United States on a rather meager $ 10.6 million. Overall, the film grossed approximately $ 47.6 million, including approximately 31.5 million in the United States. The cost of production was $ 60 million.
