Emergence

Bryan Lee O'Malley

When O'Malley began work on the first volume, a black and white comic was the only option for reasons of cost. So he decided to implement the Shōnen style, although at that time he had hardly read any other representative of the genre apart from Ranma ½ . It is Scott Pilgrim greatly from manga influenced -Stilelementen but O'Malley does not consider his work even as manga. O'Malley got the inspiration for the name of his hero from the song Scott Pilgrim by the Canadian band Plumtree.

Originally, O'Malley had only hoped to sell 1,000 copies of his comic. But Scott Pilgrim was a surprise hit that sold millions of copies and was even adapted as a feature film. As a result of this success, O'Malley was able to hire two assistants to work on the sixth volume in order to increase the artistic quality of the last book. This gave the panels much richer background details.

Since work on the final tape and the shooting of the film were about the same time, O'Malley wanted to write a finale that rivaled that of the film. He found the ending to be the hardest part of the entire series.

Publication and adaptations

The series was published in black and white from August 2004 to July 2010 by Oni Press . The comic series has been translated into different languages. It was published in German by Panini Comics from March 2010 to November 2011 . From 2012 Oni Press published the series again as a hardcover in color. The renowned colorist Nathan Fairbairn was responsible for the implementation.

reception

In 1001 Comics , Bart Beaty describes the comic as an “upbeat mix of high school love, chilling, Nintendo video games, rock'n roll and echoes of manga” and thus the prototype of a new generation of comics. The “refreshingly new mixture” offers not only weird humor but also countless references to contemporary pop culture.

In 2005 O'Malley won a Doug Wright Award with the first volume and was nominated for three Harvey Awards (Best New Talent, Best Cartoonist and Best Graphic Album of Original Work).
