Ring - The original ( Japanese リ ン グ , Ringu ) is a literary adaptation based on The Ring by Kōji Suzuki from 1998. It is also known as Ringu to distinguish it from the American remake Ring .

action

The film begins with a conversation between two teenage girls: They are talking over a mysterious videotape. According to rumors circulating among teenagers, anyone who saw the video will die after exactly seven days. One of the girls watched a videotape exactly a week ago and dies that same evening. The reporter Asakawa Reiko, the aunt of the late girl, begins to investigate the story. She finally finds out that her recently deceased niece Tomoko is said to have seen this video as well, as did three of her friends who also died at the same time. The trail leads Asakawa to a log cabin village in Izu, where she finally finds the video. She looks at it curiously. She is disturbed by the strange scenes on the video, but even worse is the fact that someone calls her shortly afterwards. Asakawa had previously discovered that the teenagers looked strangely distorted in photos after watching the video. Everything fits exactly with the rumors - Asakawa believes she only has exactly seven days to live.

The next day, she asks her ex-husband Ryuji Takayama for help. He also watches the video and both gradually begin to decipher the scenes. They come to the conclusion that the author of the video must be from Oshima. When they investigate there, they come across the Yamamura family, whose members are said to have psychic powers. After all, everything indicates that Sadako Yamamura is the creator of the video curse, but she has been gone for 30 years - and time is short. Because in the meantime Asakawa's little son Yoichi has also watched the video.

When the trail threatens to get lost and her deadline is slowly running out, Asakawa comes up with the idea to return to the log cabin, as this was the only place where the phone rang. There Ryuji and Asakawa find an old well - and in it the body of Sadako Yamamura, which was thrown into it by their own father 30 years ago. When Asakawa is still alive despite their deadline, the two come to the conclusion that recovering the corpse broke the curse. But the next day, Ryuji falls victim to him: Sadako's spirit takes on physical form and kills him. Asakawa realizes that her son is still in great danger. She feverishly ponders what she did differently than her ex-husband - and comes to the conclusion that she made a copy of the video and showed it to someone else (namely Ryuji). Thus, in order to survive, one has to pass the curse on. Desperate, she sets out to save her son.

background

This film was, after the television film Ring: Kanzenban , the second film adaptation of the novel. Many changes have been made here compared to the template. For one, the main character became a woman and Ryuji became her ex-husband. In addition, Asakawa has a son instead of a young daughter. Sadako Yamamura has been simplified. a. ignored their association with the smallpox virus . The main characters also learn less through surveys, but rather through visions suitable for film. The scenes on the video have been completely changed and shortened (in the novel the video is a quarter of an hour long, in the film only a minute). The book also doesn't have the spectacular climax of the film, in which Sadako crawls out of a television set.
