history

Edel was founded in 1986 by the current chairman of the board of directors and majority shareholder Michael Haentjes as a one-man company under the name "edel" Gesellschaft für Produktmarketing mbH and initially dealt exclusively with the mail order for film music . In 1992 the company name was changed to "edel Company" Music GmbH . The company grew steadily and in 1995 had a turnover of more than 150 million DM.

In 1998 followed under the new company name Edel Music AG the IPO (WKN 564950) and the listing on the Neuer Markt . The initial listing on the stock exchange was DM 101. The IPO brought the company a gross inflow of almost DM 60 million in capital. As part of a global strategy, investments abroad were acquired, for example the PIAS Group in Belgium , to which the Connected Music Vertrieb GmbH , also founded by Haentjes in 1997, was transferred, and Eagle Rock in Great Britain . In 2000 a group turnover of more than DM 1 billion was achieved.

In connection with the general crisis in the music business, the collapse of the New Market and the high costs of integrating the companies that had been added, a crisis followed in 2001 that endangered the continued existence of the company. In 2002 Edel implemented an extensive corporate restructuring program together with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants . Parts of the company and holdings were sold and loss-making companies were closed.

Of the more than 1700 employees, around 750 remained with the company. Through this consolidation and thanks to the stable business of the manufacturing subsidiary optimal , positive business figures could be achieved again.

At the end of the short fiscal year 2001 (September 30th), Edel switched from being listed on the Neuer Markt to the Regulated Market / General Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, which was transferred to the Regulated Market in 2007 .

In February 2007 edel music AG took over the book division of Pabel-Moewig with cookbooks, guidebooks, puzzle books, children's books and some licenses such as the silver volumes of the science fiction series Perry Rhodan .

At the general meeting in May 2007 it was decided to delete the addition “music” in the company name. The company then operated under the name "edel AG" until 2010. In December 2009, the listing on the regulated market was revoked. Since then, the share has been traded over the counter on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In 2010 Edel took over ZS Verlag GmbH Munich. In January 2011 the spelling of the company name changed to "Edel AG".

In 2010 Edel AG took over 75% of the then ZS Verlag, and the remaining 25% followed in October 2014.

In March 2011, Edel finally acquired the exploitation rights for the TV and cinema films about the cartoon characters Pettson and Findus from the insolvent TV-Loonland AG

In October 2012 Edel AG acquired 100% of the shares in Brilliant Classics BV. Brilliant Classics is one of the leading companies in the field of classical music. The label based in Leeuwarden (NL) sells its products through a worldwide network of sales partners.

Edel has held 75% of Pandastorm Pictures GmbH since October 2015.

In March 2016, Jonas Haentjes, the son of the company founder, took over the position of Director Corporate Development at Edel.

From December 2017, Michael Haentjes and Jonas Haentjes jointly led Edel AG as Co-CEOs, and Jonas Haentjes was also appointed to the Executive Board of Edel AG.

The Edel Supervisory Board includes Markus Conrad, Christian Schantz and Joel Weinstein.

In April 2018, the Executive and Supervisory Boards of Edel AG decided to convert the company into a partnership limited by shares (KGaA) in order to ensure family influence. In addition, the general partner of the KGaA should have the legal form of a European stock corporation (SE).

In March 2019, the generation transition was completed and the legal form changed to SE & Co. KGaA. Jonas Haentjes has been sole CEO since then.
