Rheinkultur (also R (h) einkultur and Rheinkultur ) was a 1983-2011 year in the Bonner Rheinaue take-find-day open air - music festival with free admission. In November 2011 it was announced that the event would not continue.

festival

With an average of around 170,000 visitors in recent years, it was one of the largest events of its kind in Germany . The festival was launched in 1983 and was financed almost exclusively through the sale of drinks, sponsors and a grant from the city of Bonn.

In recent years, the stage layout of the festival has been as follows:

There were also sporting activities on the festival site, such as a skate contest or floorball .

RhEINKULTUR in record year 2007, when 200,000 visitors came to the music festival in Bonn's Rheinauen

In addition to already established artists, artists from the local area and newcomers performed at the Rheinkultur-Festival every year. A 1on1 freestyle battle was also held annually at the beginning of the event on the “Mixery Raw Deluxe Stage” .

The visitor record was reached in 2007 at the 25th anniversary with around 200,000 visitors.

The festival mostly took place on the first Saturday in July (parallel to the Roskilde Festival ).

environmental Protection

The organizers attached particular importance to environmental protection , especially since the festival took place in Bonn's Rheinaue, an otherwise public park with sensitive vegetation. Since the first Rheinkultur Festival in 1983, the environmental protection concept has been continuously developed.
In order to avoid rubbish , there was a ban on glass bottles and food and beverages brought along on the festival site; a concept to avoid waste was developed together with various partners. The visitors were made aware of the environmental problems through various activities on the festival site. In addition, the festival, together with the green electricity provider Naturwatt, offered festival visitors the opportunity to have the CO 2 released on their journey compensated for free by reforestation . This enabled the festival to be produced completely CO 2 -neutral in 2009 . Since 2005, the festival has carried the “Sounds for Nature” environmental protection seal of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation . The European festival organization Yourope has also presented the festival with its "Green'n'Clean" award for environmental protection and sustainability since 2007. In 2008, the organizers also launched their own environmental label, “Green Rocks”. The festival visitors also had the opportunity to support the festival's environmental protection efforts by purchasing a so-called “Green Card”.

Television broadcasts

The WDR recorded the concerts for the program Rockpalast from 2004 to 2008. Complete concerts were broadcast from 2004 and specials about the festival from 2005 to 2008 (see web links ). In 2011 the WDR Rockpalast accompanied the festival again.
The reporting was expanded from 2007 onwards through the cooperation with the Internet television broadcaster Bunch.TV, which filmed the concerts on the Red Stage and published them on the Internet.
The concerts on the “Mixery Raw Deluxe Stage” were put online in 2008 and 2009 by the broadcaster Yavido and from 2008 on on the MixeryRawDeluxe.tv website. Other media partners included: Radio EinsLive , Radio BigFM , the music channel VIVA , the internet service laut.de , the Visions magazine and the Bonn city magazines Schnüss and bonnaparte.de .

history

The Rheinkultur-Festival was launched in 1983 by the Bonner Rockmusiker Association, which went bankrupt in 2002, and has since recorded a continuous increase in visitor numbers and awareness.

After the success of the first two years, the organizers decided in 1984 to organize a festival in the Rheinaue every year. From 1983 to 1990 the festival was able to increase its popularity to such an extent that the number of visitors rose from an estimated 4,000 in 1983 to over 100,000. This trend continued in the years that followed, with an estimated 200,000 visitors each in 1994, 1995 and 2007. On average, around 150,000 to 170,000 visitors came each year.
Since 2003 the festival has been organized by the newly founded Rheinkultur GmbH.

For the 25th anniversary of the festival, the previous rule that bands were only allowed to perform once at Rheinkultur was lifted and numerous well-known bands and artists, most of whom had played at the festival earlier, could be presented. Just two weeks before the festival, Die Fantastischen Vier were announced as headliners. They had applied in 1991 but had been rejected by the organizers at the time.

Savior offensive

In 2010 the festival was only able to attract around 60,000 visitors due to a violent storm on festival day and the World Cup quarter-final of the German national soccer team that was taking place at the same time . As the income from the sale of drinks and food on the festival site, through which the festival is largely financed, was too low, a financial loss of around 60,000 euros resulted. In addition, there was the tight budget situation in the city of Bonn, because of which the public subsidies for the festival were called into question. In order to still be able to finance a festival for the next year, the organizers started the “Rheinkultur Retter Offensive”, in which a successful attempt was made to raise additional funds, including the sale of special “Rheinkultur Retter” T-shirts, a competition , various concerts and a Christmas gala (canceled at short notice due to insufficient ticket sales). In addition, numerous bands and artists demonstrated their support for the festival with photos of them wearing the “rescue” shirts. In addition, a support association for the Rhine Culture Festival was founded.

At the beginning of February 2011, the organizers announced that the 29th edition of the festival, mainly due to the income from the rescuer offensive and the fact that the subsidies from the city of Bonn were returned to the budget at the usual level, as planned on 2 July 2011 can take place.

Adjustment of the Rhine culture

On November 9, 2011, the organizers canceled the “Rheinkultur 2012” and announced that they would finally give up the event. There were many reasons for this. On the one hand, the lack of support from the city of Bonn was criticized, which the festival always used for advertising purposes - but at the same time would have hindered the organization. On the other hand, financial aspects were also mentioned, which, however, would not have been decisive. The organizers also criticized the visitors to the festival, especially with regard to the Rhine Culture 2011, in which the number of heavily drunk young people and frequent cases of violent vandalism and even arson had exceeded the tolerance limit.
