Michael Franti (2008)

Michael Franti (born April 21, 1966 in Oakland , California ) is an American poet and musician . Franti is the founder and driving force behind the band Michael Franti & Spearhead , which combines hip-hop with a range of musical styles such as reggae , funk , folk and rock . Franti often uses a mixture of poetry and short sound interludes. The poetry mostly deals with political topics such as poverty, justice, nutrition, world peace, etc.

Live and act

Franti is of African American descent but was raised by adoptive parents of Finnish descent . His music career began in the Industrial - hip-hop band The Beatnigs, from then The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy emerged. After the breakup of the Heroes, he devoted himself to his solo career and the band Spearhead. He gradually moved away from hip-hop and began to have influences from reggae , funk , pop , folk and the like. Ä. to include in his music.

His lyrics were always socially critical and political, he sang and rapped about pollution, homophobia , racism , the Iraq war and similar topics. He is a member of the US Green Party and took part in the Occupy Wall Street protests.
