... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (short: Trail of Dead ) is an American rock band . Their music can be assigned to alternative rock , but also contains elements of various other styles of rock and other music.

The band derives its name from their long-standing involvement with Mayan culture, where the line Sever for us all ties between the now and what is to be, We will act as your sword, in a ritual chant as early as the 19th century oh Great Itzamná , And you will know us by the trail of dead. (Quotation taken from the Trail of Dead homepage; in German, for example: Loosen all ties for us between the now and what will be. We will be your sword, oh great Itzamná, and you will recognize us by the trail of the dead. ) was deciphered. A similar text is said to have been found in a grave text of the ancient Egyptians . Ultimately, according to the band member Conrad Keely, the name-finding story and its background is a joke.

Band history

Note: There are different statements about the history of the band, whereby the band consciously plays with truth and lies. The story presented here is based on information on the band's homepage.

The band members, all born around 1975, grew up in the small Christian community of Plano in the US state of Texas . As children, the four friends were members of the local church choir, which had a high reputation at national level and also took part in international competitions.

After Keely and Reece had already started to make rock music during a stay in Hawaii , they formed their first band Mukilteo Fairies in Olympia , Washington state in 1994 . Shortly afterwards, however, they went back to Texas, this time to Austin . There they met Neil Busch again and they began there initially as a vocal ensemble under the name You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead to perform at church festivals. The origin of this name was related to text finds in the context of research on Maya culture, which was carried out intensively at the University of Texas at the time and with which they came into contact through Neil Busch. Keely and Reece in particular were looking for links between different cultures, including mathematical and physical relationships. They came across the teachings of Greil Marcus , Guy Debord and Anton Szandor LaVey . Their aim was to find an anthropological unit, a kind of "red thread" in the history of human cultures.

After the duo had expanded into a full band (including Neil Busch and Kevin Allen), they were now called ... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead . In their music they try to combine the findings of their research on musical anthropology with the means of modern rock music. In 1998 their first, self-titled album was released , which also includes musical influences from Papua New Guinea and Polynesia, for example . In addition, they played a number of concerts, both in the US and in Europe. It was a "trademark" of the band that they smashed their instruments at their concerts. This should also physically represent the interplay of destruction and construction, as it is expressed in their music.

The following albums, Madonna and Source Tags & Codes contain other examples from the music history of different centuries. On the 2005 album Worlds Apart they are mainly devoted to the history of rock music over the past 40 years. The influences of the Beatles , David Bowie , Pink Floyd and Oasis can be heard clearly in various pieces , whereby the signature of ... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead is always retained.

At the same time as Worlds Apart , Conrad Keely published an essay entitled "Death of the Enlightened Amateur - A Brief Summary of Key Developments in Western Music" ("The Death of the Enlightened Amateur - A Brief Summary of Key Developments in Western Music") , in which he traces the history of music from ancient Greece to pop.

In the January 2006 issue of the music magazine Visions , Worlds Apart was named album of the year 2005 by the editorial team. So Divided was published on November 14, 2006 by Interscope / Universal . After the EP Festival Thyme , which was released in 2008 as a preview, followed on February 20, 2009 with The Century of Self, the sixth studio album, which was no longer released on a major label, but on the band's own Richter Scale Records . At the same time, a world tour began in the USA, which was continued in Europe in April.

On February 4, 2011, her seventh studio album called Tao of the Dead was released on the German label Superball Music . The pre-release single Summer of All Dead Souls was only available as a download.

In October 2012 the band released their next album: Lost Songs. With Lost Songs, a trail of dead album was recorded for the first time in the Horus Sound Studio in Hanover . In addition to producer Chris "Frenchie" Smith, engineer Mirko Hofmann was also involved in the recordings.
