The Century of Self is the sixth studio album by the Texan band … And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead . It was released on February 17, 2009 as the first album on the band's own label Richter Scale Records . The title of the album was inspired by the 2002 Adam Curtis documentary The Century of the Self , which describes how Sigmund Freud "discovered" the subconscious.

Reviews

In contrast to its predecessors Worlds Apart and So Divided , the album received mostly good to very good reviews, which is due, among other things, to the fact that the band no longer released The Century of Self on a major label , but on their own label, which gave her the greatest possible freedom in recording and production.

  • The album received 4 out of 5 stars from Allmusic , with the fact that it sounds more liberated than the two previous albums Worlds Apart and So Divided , as the recordings were made without a click track for the first time since Source Tags & Codes .
  • Laura Davies rated the album 5 out of 5 stars on Gigwise.com and summarized her review with the following words: "It has masterpiece written all over it."
  • Niall Doherty from The-Fly.co.uk awarded 4.5 out of 5 flies and declared The Century of Self to be the creative culmination of a smooth and continuous evolution of the band since their first album. The album underlines why Trail of Dead is one of the liveliest, most daring and most ambitious bands in the world.
  • Spin's William Goodman gave the album 8 out of 10 points and said the tracks Ascending and Luna Park presented the band in their unvarnished, hauntingly booming top form.
  • Sascha Krüger from the music magazine Visions wrote about The Century of Self : "The new album is closer to the noise of the breakthrough work" Source Tags & Codes ", but at the same time as opulent as the last works." The readers of Visions rated the album with 9.9 out of 12 points.
  • Ian Cohen at Pitchfork Media gave 6.8 out of 10 points .

Artwork

The complete artwork of the album was drawn by Conrad Keely with just a ballpoint pen. According to Jason Reece in an interview, Keely chose this because ballpoint pens can be found everywhere and are not usually considered an art tool.

Track information

The Giants Causeway is a shortened version of the title The Betrayal of Roger Casement & the Irish Brigade , which is included on the previously released EP Festival Thyme . The song is named after the basalt columns on the Northern Irish coast (see Giant's Causeway ), so that the reference to Ireland was indirectly included in the title. Even Inland Sea and Bells of Creation have already been published on this EP in other versions.

The titles Pictures of an Only Child and Insatiable (One) have been swapped on some releases in the title list on the back of the album, while the lyrics on the cover have been printed in the correct order.

The Far Pavilions is originally the title of a book by Mary M. Kaye (German title: Palace of the Wind ).
