Tao of the Dead is the seventh studio album by the Texan band … And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead . It was released on February 4, 2011 on the German label Superball Music . It was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas and The Bubble in Austin, Texas. It's the first album without guitarist Kevin Allen. Autry Fulbright II and Aaron Ford have joined the band as new members.

According to the band, the title of the album should be a play on words that refers to the Daodejing , through which the band was inspired for their lyrics.

After Kevin Allen left the band, the core of the band consisted only of the two founding members Conrad Keely and Jason Reece. Autry Fulbright II and Aaron Ford, who could be heard as guest musicians on previous releases and has been an integral part of the band for touring for years, joined the band for this. Chris "Frenchie" Smith, who had produced the debut album in 1998, was hired as a producer for this album. The entire album was recorded in just ten days. The band names Kraftwerk and Rush as musical influences for the album .

The original plan was to record the entire album as a single long song. It is believed that the realization of this plan failed, among other things, at the record company. So it was decided to split the album into two parts, which consist of several sentences . In the first part (“Tao of the Dead”) the eleven sentences on the CD can be selected individually, part two (“Strange News From Another Planet”) consists of five movements in a single piece. The limited edition comes closest to the original vision, as it contains both parts in one piece on the first CD. On the second CD of the Limited Edition, the sentences from part one can be selected individually, but this then contains the title The Bubble Demo instead of Strange News From Another Planet .

Artwork

Conrad Keely was also responsible for the entire artwork and layout for this album. The cover shows various characters from a graphic novel by Keely that he has been working on for years. 16 pages of this graphic novel Strange News from Another Planet - The Adventures of the Festival Thyme are contained in the book-like limited edition. The Festival Thyme is a ship sailing through the air that was featured on the cover of the band 's EP of the same name . The limited edition also includes the 33-page short story Lucy's Story: The Paramystic Pendant , also written by Conrad Keely. As a little bonus there is a pop-up in the middle , which shows the figures of the cover again.
