Extrabreit from Hagen is one of the most commercially successful Neue Deutsche Welle bands of the 1980s. The band actually came from the punk movement and understood itself that way. However, it owed its success to the NDW. On their website they wrote: "Yes, we just went through the shit!"

In their more than 40-year history, the band was particularly successful in the 1980s and early 1990s. During this time, there were a number of line-up changes as well as several creative breaks and dissolutions. The band, which is still active today, has over the years mainly consisted of the guitarist Stefan “Kleinkrieg” Klein , the singer Kai “Havaii” Schlasse and the drummer Rolf Möller .

Band history

Beginnings

Extrabreit was founded in 1978 by Stefan “Kleinkrieg” Klein and Gerhard “Käpt'n Horn” Sperling. The idea for the band name came from Gerhard Sperling, who discovered it on a particularly thick felt-tip pen from the edding company . Ralf "Rhava" Denz, who also played with The Ramblers , took over the bass. Horst-Werner Wiegand became the first singer. The band quickly gained a good reputation as a live band in their hometown of Hagen. Just before a gig, Wiegand got out surprisingly. Out of necessity, the comic artist Kai Schlasse joined the band, who later steered the band's fortunes together with Klein under the name “Kai Havaii”. In Jörg A. Hoppe the band finally found a manager.

After a demo, the band found a record company with the label Metronome ( Warner Music Group ). On April 14, 1980 the first single Hart like jam was released . Her first album was finally released in the summer of 1980 under the title Your Biggest Successes and already contained her first big hit Hurray, Hurray, the school is burning! . It was published as the B-side of the single Flieger, greet me the sun , a cover version of the Hans Albers song, and initially went unnoticed.

successes

Extrabreit experienced the high point of her career in the years 1981 to 1983, when she not only helped shape the Neue Deutsche Welle, but also achieved her greatest successes with sold-out concert halls, gold records and BRAVO front pages. One of their most successful hits, Police , was created during concert rehearsals in the Rockpalast Hohenlimburg . This title can be found on their rather dark and apocalyptic album Welch ein Land! - What manner of men: . The song was not played in the Bayerischer Rundfunk program , allegedly at the instigation of the Bavarian Prime Minister Franz-Josef Strauss . What a country! - What men! became her first big seller.

In the wake of this success, the debut, titled your greatest successes , and the single Hurray, Hurray, the school is burning ! also high sales. Also the third LP, the return of the fantastic 5! , which included a duet with Marianne Rosenberg ( Duo Infernal ), still sold very well. Jörg A. Hoppe, the band's manager at the time, turned out to be very adept at marketing the records: What a country! - What for men: appeared with a 3-D cover and enclosed glasses, The return of the fantastic five in different colored covers and with an attached poster. After Hurray, Hurray, the school burns in retrospect turned out to be a hit, Extrabreit suddenly found themselves within the NDW. At the same time, the bond with the punk scene, which the band was really hostile to because of its commercial success, ended. In 1982 a festival tour followed with Spliff , Interzone and Prima Klima , which was sponsored by Levi's Jeans . The band found themselves in the Bravo and had a short appearance in the NDW cult film Gib Gas - I want fun with Nena and Markus . On the soundtrack is the song Superhelden , whereby the band operated under the role name Die Fantastischen Fünf in the film .

This was also the title of their third album, released in 1982, The Return of the Fantastic Five . It was produced by Reinhold Mack , who had already worked with Queen and the Sparks . The album contains a duet with the German pop singer Marianne Rosenberg . In 1982 the band also received a gold award for each of the albums Her Greatest Successes and What a Land! - What men! .

Extrabreit experienced their first major setbacks at the beginning of 1983. Initially, they refused to appear at Dieter Thomas Heck for image reasons, followed by a crash in a hotel bar, accompanied by the media. There the visibly drunk Ulrich Ruhwedel poked up at Udo Jürgens , who had the band removed from the bar. A tour under the motto Germany in a coup d'état , which had been widely announced and cost 140,000 D-Marks for the videos alone, was only moderately attended.

After two band members left in mid-1983, there were two German-English albums called Europa (1983) and LP of the Week (1984). In Europe , the band also received excellent reviews in the specialist press for the first time. At around 35,000 copies, sales remained far below expectations (for comparison: your greatest successes had sold around 420,000 times, what a country! - What for men: 360,000 times and the fantastic five return 200,000 times).

After almost two years of creative hiatus, the band returned in 1987 with the purely English-language album Sex After 3 Years in a Submarine , which was commercially unsuccessful. This album also received benevolent criticism, but for many fans it did not fit the direction of the band, which also called for the old songs on tour. The band then took another break. During this time, Kleinkrieg published the project Mona Liza Overdrive . Kai Havaii also worked on a solo album, but it never appeared.

Pause and return

Kai Havaii 2017 live with Extrabreit

After the release of the best-of album Back from the Future , the band returned to the consciousness of fans. The album and a remix by Flieger, greet me the sun hit the German charts. Spurred on by this success, the band reformed. However, the 1980s had taken its toll. After trying to continue with the original line-up, Ruhwedel and Wolfgang Hunter had to leave the band for health reasons. In 1991 the album, Whoever thinks bad, should finally be silent . After that, Kai Havaii made a successful drug withdrawal .

In 1993 the album Hotel Monopol was released , which contained her last single hit with the single Für mich's shall's red roses , which was recorded together with Hildegard Knef . The song reached number 35 on the charts, and the accompanying video introduced the band to a younger audience via Viva and MTV . There was even a one-hour special about the band in the VIVA Jam series .

The subsequent tour was successful and the album Every Day - Every Night (1996) also hit the German charts. With Nothing is Forever there is another duet of a well-known greatness, Harald Juhnke . But the previously enthusiastic music broadcaster VIVA surprisingly dropped the band. VIVA refused to play the video because Juhnke and the band were supposedly too old. In fact, the band actually experienced a rejuvenation. The second guitar was recorded by Tom Schwoll (ex- Jingo de Lunch ). Bassist Sebastian Gäbel, formerly with Bray D. Bunch , was just 22 years old. However, Juhnke's alcohol problems proved to be a hindrance to the effect of the single. In the same year, a compilation with newly recorded old hits by the band was released under the title Superfett . However, this flopped.

In 1998 the album Amen was released , which was planned as the end of the extra-wide career. On September 19, 1998, the final concert followed in front of over 4,000 spectators. Nena was a surprise guest on the show, and the original cast played cops together for the last time . A live recording was released in 2002 by SPV as a double album under the title The Last Battle .

But the breakup was short-lived. On August 31, 2002, the first concert after the reunion was played in Bochum . The new band consisted of Kai Havaii, Kleinkrieg, who in the meantime had released his second solo album Acid , and Rolf Möller. Then there was Bubi Hönig and the newest member Lars “Larsson” Hartmann. In 2003 the band was allowed to play the official DFB anthem He makes it purely on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Bundesliga . In 2005 the album Peace was released. Extrabreit played their 1000th concert on August 27, 2005 in front of several thousand spectators at the Hengsteysee in Hagen. A live double album and a DVD were released for the concert.

In 2007 Kai Havaii's biography Hart wie Jam was published . In 2008 a collaboration with the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra followed . The band performed with the orchestra on two days in the sold-out Parktheater Iserlohn. The live recording was released on DVD and CD.

In May 2008 Extrabreit released their last album to date, Neues von Hiob, with the single Lärm .

In December 2002, Extrabreit organized their Christmas blitz tour for the first time, which took them to five clubs in Germany. In 2019, the Christmas Blitz tour has become a constant in the fans' calendar with 17 concerts in larger halls.

In 2019 Kai Havaii's first novel "Rubicon" was published by Aufbau-Verlag . The press release begins with the words: "If you go too far - and a turnaround would be fatal." The debut novel developed into a bestseller and earned Havaiis a nomination for the Glauser Prize in the debut detective novel category.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the band to cancel some concerts planned for 2020. The Christmas blitz tour should continue and fans and extra broad hope that the concerts can take place in November and December 2020.

On April 1st, 40 years after “Flieger, greet me the sun”, the band released another Hans Albers cover. The song, which was initially offered for free download on the band's website, was released on April 17th via Premium Records / Believe on streaming and download platforms. The single "And above us the sky" is a slogan for perseverance and a thank you to the fans.

There are growing signs from the band's environment that Extrabreit are working on a new album. It would be her 13th studio album since her debut album "Your Greatest Successes" was released in 1980.

Music genre

The band's music style is subject to constant change. Founded during the first punk wave in Germany, the first songs were characterized by deliberate amateurism, but also by simple rock'n'roll. With the first two albums, however, and especially the single releases Hurra, Hurra, die Schule burns! , Aviators, say hello to the sun and the police made a decisive contribution to shaping the Neue Deutsche Welle, even though the accompanying album Welch ein Land! - Which for men by no means corresponded to the cheerful zeitgeist of the NDW, but rather appeared extremely dystopian. Accordingly, the first two albums also contained clear concessions to the punk slogans No Future and Null Bock . They were also clearly shaped by the Cold War of the 1980s.

After the first three albums, which all reached the top 10 of the German album charts, the band began to experiment and tried their hand at electronic music in the style of popular New Wave as well as more experimental sounds, the climax of which was the English-language album Sex After 3 Years in became a submarine . The album's smart pop was influenced by contemporary musicians who were also keen to experiment, such as David Bowie , Bob Geldof and Sigue Sigue Sputnik .

After its comeback in the 1990s, the music was essentially rooted in German rock and again kept more conventional. The lyrics remained socially critical, biting-ironic and melancholic.
