Sex After 3 Years in a Submarine is the sixth studio album by the German band Extrabreit , released in 1987 . It is the only exclusively English-language album that the band produced.

background

After the album LP of the Week, released in 1984 , which failed to meet commercial expectations, the band members of Extrabreit went their separate ways. In 1987 singer Kai Havaii , guitarist Stefan Kleinkrieg and bassist Hunter, supplemented by keyboardist Peter Szimanneck and drummer Michael Gaßmann, returned to the studio to record a new extra-wide album.

As with the previous album , the producer Reinhold Mack , who was best known for his work with Queen ( The Game , Hot Space , The Works , A Kind of Magic ) took over the production of the album. After the week's LP had already contained half of the songs in English and half in German, the band was now planning to record an exclusively English-language album. The aim was to “acquire the reputation of serious rock musicians who also meet international demands.” The musical style of the group changed as a result: the new compositions were based “on modern international rock music”, the “structures of the individual Pieces "appeared" more sophisticated "and the band made" a fresh and mature impression. "

Most of the recordings took place in the Fairland Studios in Bochum , where the sound engineer Manni Struck was responsible, three other tracks ( Blue Moon (Shine On), I Cry for You and I Don't Believe in Magic ) were made in the Mascot Studios recorded in Cologne , where the group was supervised by Kit Woolven. The sound mixing was done by Mack in the Musicland Studios in Munich .

The album was released on February 16, 1987 as a record with 10 tracks, the CD also released contained two additional songs. The record sleeve of the LP consisted of a special white cardboard on which with pink fluorescent paint the words "EXTRA WIDE" and "AFTER 3 YEARS IN A SUBMARINE" were printed. The word “SEX” in white took up the middle of the cover and extended over the entire width of the cover. It visually broke through a pink band . In the lower right corner was a stylized pink submarine embossed with relief. The cover of the first edition was shrink-wrapped, and there was a sticker in the film that showed a larger version of the submarine on the record cover. Condoms were used as promotional items , on the packaging of which the slogan “Feeling really catchy extra wide” was printed.

As single was Blue Moon (Shine On) coupled to the B side, the title was Voice Calling, which was not on the record. For advertising purposes, advertisements for the album were placed in the magazines Musikmarkt (full-page), Musikexpress , Pop / Rocky , Musik Szene, Spex and Music Shop (each half-page) in February and March 1987 .

A tour of Germany with 26 dates was planned for April 1987 .

reception

Detlef Kinsler wrote in the Musikexpress in March 1987 : "If the extra wide Kai Havaii, Stefan Kleinkrieg and Hunter also lacked sex in their submarine (that is, in the meanwhile sinking)," they should at least have "had a radio close by" . Her comeback processed in an "unconventional and absolutely non-market-oriented way pretty much all the findings of recent Anglo-American pop music ( Bowie and Iggy Pop , Bob Geldof and Sigue Sigue Sputnik , Huey Lewis and Bruce Springsteen )" and presented "a sound." who is equally elegant and trashy ”. “Just for this cheek” the editor gave 4 out of 5 possible points.

Musikmarkt wrote that Extrabreit had “matured not only in the music, but also in the lyrics. From a still ironic, but now quite self-critical perspective ”,“ personal longings as well as social grievances are mentioned by name. ” I Don't Believe in Magic -“ catchy power pop for dancing ”- form“ with a well-rehearsed live atmosphere ” the start of the album. "Strong bass lines and guitar sounds similar to hard rock" are combined with "synthetically produced brass sections." The following He's a Rogue also has "besides its rock character, a high degree of dance suitability," and titles such as "brass-focused talkin 'talkin' " combined them "The driving rhythm of a dance number with the melodic lightness of a pop song."

Daniel Alexander said it remains to be seen whether the album will reach the charts, but that is “not a standard of quality, as is well known.” Anyone who likes robust rock and does not disdain “a few unusual ideas” should definitely listen to the album.
