Hurray, hurray, the school is on fire is a song by the German band Extrabreit from 1980. It was initially released as the B-side of the single Flieger, greet me the sun - a cover version of the well-known title by Hans Albers - and is on the debut album Ihr greatest hits (1980) included. The single reached number 12 in the German single charts. In 1982, the single appeared again with the A and B sides swapped.

Song info

The title of the play goes to the German feature film Hurray, the school is burning! from 1969 back.

The song was composed and written by the then singer Kai Havaii (Kai Schlasse) and the drummer Käptn Horn (Gerd Sperling).

The text describes young people from the 1980s celebrating the burn down of their school, which is why it was rarely broadcast on the radio because of alleged calls for arson . The song appeared on many compilations for the Neue Deutsche Welle .

Cover versions (selection)

Otto Waalkes modified the text of the song and used it under the title Hurra, hurra, die Hexe burns for his satirizing retelling of the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel with songs from the Neue Deutsche Welle .

A cover version of the British pop band Busted from 2003 reached number 19 in the German, number 20 in the Austrian and number 34 in the Swiss charts.

The right-wing extremist band Die Härt converted the text to “ Hurray, hurray, a nigger is burning ” and glorified the murder of a Ku Klux Klan member of a black man. Extrabreit found out about the cover version released in 1999 in 2004 and filed criminal charges against unknown persons.

The band Maggers United played the song under the title Hurray, Hurray, the room is burning in the 2007 film No Covenant for Life .

The band SDP covered the song in 2014, only the chorus was retained lyrically. The stanzas have been completely rewritten with some references to the original and strong adjustments have been made to the time.
