Hart wie Marmelade is the title of the first commercial release by the German rock band Extrabreit . The song was released as a single before the group signed a recording deal .

background

Label of the single

Extrabreit was founded in 1978 by Stefan “Kleinkrieg” Klein and Gerhard “Käpt'n Horn” Sperling . The group quickly gained a good reputation as a live band in their hometown of Hagen . After the departure of the founding members Horst-Werner Wiegand (vocals) and Ralf Denz (electric bass), they were replaced by Kay-Oliver Schlasse and Ralf Teuwen. In 1979 the band recorded a 10-song demo tape entitled Rock from Wehrdichhausen , which was released on a C-60 compact cassette .

A supporter was found in Hartwig Masuch , who made it possible for them to record their first single and promised to take care of a record deal for the group. The band signed a publishing contract with his Wiehagen & Masuch music publisher in the same year .

In January 1980 the band recorded the song Hart wie Marmelade , written by Kai Havaii and Stefan Kleinkrieg, in the Hiltpoltstein recording studio , with song 1.36, which was still written by Horst-Werner Wiegand, serving as the B-side . Masuch produced the single under his pseudonym Christian Schneider, with whom he also acted as a singer in the band The Ramblers . He kept his promise and got the group a record deal with the Reflektor Z label, a sub-label of Metronome for new German-language rock music .

The label refused to publish the original recording, however, because it contained the line "and then I'll pull white powder until the nostrils smoke". The group was asked to deliver a radio version of the song. She did this by changing the line of text to "and then I'll move through the jungle until my tennis socks smoke". The agreement that manager Jörg A. Hoppe reached for the band stipulated that the original text would be used on any album that might be released.

This first version of the song is very different from the version later for half a year 's debut album of the group, their greatest success , was taken. The single is popular among collectors and is now (2020) traded for an average of € 19.98
