Return of the fantastic 5! is the title of the third studio album by the German band Extrabreit . Like the two previous albums, it was recorded in the Hiltpoltstein studio. The mix led Reinhold Mack in Union Center Munich through.

background

Extrabreit had their debut album in 1980 and only a year later their second album, Welch ein Land! - What for men: published who both reached the top ten of the German music charts . Both albums were recorded in the Hiltpoltstein recording studio in Hiltpoltstein operated by Jonas Porst .

During the planning phase for the concept for the next album, the artists Mali Beinhorn and Werner Büsch contacted the manager of the band, Jörg A. Hoppe . The reason for this was that the drawing of a man tearing his hair, which was already used for the group's debut album, came from Büsch and Beinhorn, but the band had used it without their permission.

Kai Havaii later explained the cause of the copyright infringement as follows: “We discovered“ Steve ”, as I now call him, in 1979 as a reproduction in some underground magazine - as usual without any copyright information. The whole style felt "American" and we assumed that the picture came from the USA. In any case, we weren't squeamish and used it, especially on our first record (...) "

In the agreement that followed the negotiations, the band acquired the rights to the drawing, and at the same time Beinhorn and Büsch were commissioned to draw two posters for the theme of the return of the fantastic 5 .

Work on the recordings began in June 1982. Most of the songs on the album were created in Hiltpoltstein, the song Her with the Adventures , which had already started in the band's rehearsal room in Hagen , was completed here. The final version of kleptomania was in the studio, and the selection of songs that find their way onto the album, included at the end of nine titles. Another conspiracy, described by Kai Havaii as "a pretty slow number that had such a soulful text" only ended up on the cassette edition of the album after tour manager Norbert Thiel had determined that the song sounded as if it came from Peter Cornelius .

One song, namely Duo Infernal, a duet with Marianne Rosenberg , was recorded by the band in July 1982 at the Hansa Studios in Berlin . Rosenberg, actually known as a pop star with a rather staid image, had enthusiastically accepted the offer to work with the band and was committed and flirtatious during the recordings .

The original mixing of the album was done by sound engineer Manfred Neuner, but the band, who had aimed at a certain pop appeal with the album , did not agree with the result. She wanted a "fatter sound, wider" so that a remix of the album was required. Since the time to the planned release date was short, it was necessary to hurry. The savior in need was Reinhold Mack , who had made a name for himself through productions for Queen , Electric Light Orchestra and the Rolling Stones .

Manager Hoppe coordinated the cover concept for the album with the record company . The album was to be offered in five different-colored record sleeves, each of which had five bullet holes in the lower left corner. The album, which was released on September 1, 1982, was then offered in the colors green, blue, yellow, orange and pink. The CD version, which was only published in very small numbers (approx. 5000 copies) (for the time), was only available with a blue booklet.

The marketing for the album began with a mailing campaign , during which postcards to several thousand Fanadressen were sent. The postcard they received was the first of two drafts that the draftsman duo Mali & Werner (Beinhold and Büsch) had made. It showed the band members as comic heroes in front of a chaotic city backdrop. Above the picture was the text: "The rampage of the time mutator will be stopped - see what is going on today in Metropolis ..." Under the picture read: "Return of the fantastic 5: From 1.9. in your record shop! "

In the record sleeves of the vinyl editions was a poster in DIN A1 format, also drawn by Mali & Werner , which showed the band members in superhero poses and costumes and was subtitled "Extra wide - return of the fantastic 5!"

For the second single , Kleptomania, two music videos by Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher were shot in Vienna . The first showed the band in a live situation in a hangar , the second is based on the lyrics of the song and was shot in a Viennese department store rented for this purpose . The clip showed singer Kai Havaii, who, protected by the other band members, stole a pair of shoes. After a chase, it ended with a cake battle in downtown Vienna.

Immediately after sales began, the album reached number five on the German music charts , but the single Her with the adventures only reached number 70.

For Musikexpress , Holger Krüssmann wrote that the “starting position for the fantastic five” was “optimal”: After “two big hits that were created with more or less poor means”, the means were now available for the first time to “get into To make the studio extra wide. ”But the band made the mistake of exposing themselves to“ concrete stress ”. Every second something “really monstrous has to happen” in order to “ultimately deliver something even more gigantic.” Unfortunately, nothing came of that. Producer Mack let "the colleagues between sound mountains of guitars and keys (!) Shrink beyond recognition," however topics and lyrics could be great. A very "important thing about the extra-wide appearance" was that they conveyed chutzpah, sex and provincial appeal. This was then "combined with really good pictures and wit and the qualities of a not exactly super good, but straight rock band". What counted was “the possibility of identification.” In making this statement, the author drew a comparison with Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts , who “deliberately never played one hit too many”. It becomes very clear “precisely with the Hagen hymn,” which was already featured on the Hagen sampler in a version that “sounded so great on every noble system in all its bleakness and poverty” “as on the one Mister Hit for twenty marks. ”However, she hit“ exactly on the spot ”and was“ sexy ”. Dinosaurs, on the other hand, are “not sexy.” The author awarded two stars out of five.

Trivia

On the night of July 6th to 7th, 1982, members of the band came up with the idea for a "game" after some of the musicians had bought alarm weapons and flare ammunition in a gun shop in Nuremberg. Two groups were formed who chased each other through the town in two cars and shot at each other when they met. The sensational “skirmish” also meant that the band members received a message from residents the following day that they would actually be “burned on the fur” if they repeated the game. In the acknowledgments on the inner sleeve of the record, after the release, under the introduction, “Our special thanks go” read among other things: “(...) Waffen Runge / Nuremberg + all residents of Markt Hiltpoltstein for the night of the 6th July 7th, 82nd "
