Wolfgang Mieder (born February 17, 1944 in Nossen ) is professor of German language and folklore at the US University of Vermont in Burlington (Vermont) and an internationally recognized paremiologist .

Mieder attended the Carl-Jacob-Burckhardt-Gymnasium in Lübeck and studied German and French at the Olivet College in Michigan. After studying in Caen , he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1967 with a master's degree . After another stay at the University of Heidelberg , he received his doctorate in 1970 at the Michigan State University with the thesis " The saying in the works Jeremias Gotthelf " for Ph.D.

Wolfgang Mieder is a globally recognized expert on German proverbs and fairy tales . He is the editor of the Supplement Series to Proverbium , the Proverbium: Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship, and the author of more than a hundred books on proverb .

In 1996 he was elected an external member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences .
