Parömie is the scientific term for the proverb and other related genres.

The term comes from the late Latin paroemia , which in turn comes from the ancient Greek παροιμία paroimia , the ancient Greek term for 'saying', 'parable', etc. Ä. decreases.

Derived from this is the discipline of paremiology , so the study of proverbs and related genera saying. Researchers who deal with paremiology are also called paremiologists .

Paremiography , by comparison, involves collecting and documenting proverbs; accordingly, a paremiographer is a collector or editor of a collection of proverbs.
