Band history

In 1968 Pudelko founded the blues-rock group Curly Curve together with bassist Kurt Herkenberg , in which guitarist Leo Lehr and drummer Hans Wallbaum later also played, but left the band again in the early 1970s. In 1978 Curly Curve came to an end and the Trio Wallbaum, Herkenberg, Lehr approached Pudelko, who had meanwhile started to work with German texts.

At the beginning of 1979 the four founded the group Interzone , which was joined shortly afterwards by Ralf “Trotter” Schmidt, “Bibi” Schulz and Axel Fuhrmann from the Berlin Bar Band . At first Pudelko did not write his own texts, but was fascinated by the poems of Wolf Wondratschek . After the success of their self-produced single Kinderlieder aus Beton , Pudelko and Interzone wanted to publish the music of their first album complete with Wondratschek texts set to music in 1980, but the lyricist withdrew his consent.

At the beginning of 1981 Interzone went to the Berlin audio recording studio without a record contract and recorded the first Interzone album with Udo Arndt as co-producer . Shortly before the end of production, an agreement was reached with a record company and in mid-June 1981 the debut album with the band name in the title was released. The Musikexpress presented the formation in song excerpts on a Flexi-Disc. Shortly afterwards, Interzone played in front of 22,000 fans on the Berlin Waldbühne and was broadcast live on television. With increasing popularity, the band decided to go on a 7-day, 7-city tour in November of that year, which was followed by appearances (together with Spliff , Prima Klima und Extrabreit ) on the “Levi's Rock Festival” tour in the spring of 1982 . This festival tour was well attended, mainly by a very young audience.

In September 1982, Aus Liebe , the second album by Heiner Pudelko and Interzone , was released. B. the "Tip" magazine wrote that it was "... pure material da capo ...". The album was widely received by critics. Although it did not make it onto the official charts, sales were substantial.

In the middle of 1983 another concert was played on the Berlin Waldbühne, "Trotter" Schmidt helped his friends at the Waldbühne concert on bass, but was no longer available for the other band projects. The "Tagesspiegel" wrote about this concert with many Berlin bands: "... what luck that at least a real blues and soul band of the highest quality was scheduled to end with 'Interzone'".

At the end of 1984 the single I and my friend the cat was released , which was produced by Nena producer Reinhold Heil and Udo Arndt . Guitarist Lehr dropped out shortly afterwards, bass was now played by Benjamin Hüllenkremer, who replaced James Delbridge; Ingo Bischof (formerly Kraan ) joined the keyboards . In the summer of 1985 Interzone presented themselves with a new sound. The third album, Das süße Leben , did not sell particularly well, despite the relatively extensive advertising campaign. In the summer of 1986 the band broke up.

In 1988 Annette Humpe and Conny Plank produced Heiner Pudelko's first solo album entitled Mein Schatz , in which all the Interzone musicians again took part. In the same year Leo Lehr died, was run over by a truck and died. Shortly after the turn of the year 1994/1995, Pudelko died at the age of 46. After his death, the record company released a compilation of the best songs by Pudelko and Interzone from 17 years under the title With kind regards .

Mario Schulz later played with Stoppok , Hans Wallbaum with the Hamburg Blues Band , Ingo Bischof and Benjamin Hüllenkremer worked as studio musicians. Ralf "Trotter" Schmidt was the bass player in the rock band The Drivers and the Blues Alligators in Berlin.

40 years after the recording of the record with the Wondratschek texts, the rights were released, the master tapes were revised and the record was published under the title Last Exit on March 15, 2019.
