Coma Chameleon is the seventh studio album by the Donots . It was released on March 28, 2008 as a limited edition signed by the band and as a "normal" album version. The album went straight to number 41 in the German album charts.

Emergence

Coma Chamaeleon was written four years after the last studio album, Got the Noise . Originally under contract with Gun Records , the band asked for the contract to be terminated. Without a label behind them, work began on the album and the entire production was financed in advance. The band first worked with producer Kurt Ebelhäuser . So the band went into the studio relatively unprepared and Ebelhäuser completely reworked the songs that had previously been written in the rehearsal room.

“It used to be that we often went to the studio in the morning without having any idea what would come out of it in the end (Ingo Knollmann) (...) Working with Kurt, the songs quickly got a completely new face. There are only two or three songs on the album that we recorded as we wrote them before. We are therefore not talking about our 'next' album, but about the 'new' album ". (Jan Dirk)"

In addition, the band engaged Vincent Sorg , who had produced the second album Tonight's Karaoke Contest Winners (1998). However, he only produced the songs Pick Up the Pieces , New Hope for the Dead and Killing Time .

The album title is a nod to Karma Chameleon by Boy Georges Culture Club .

The finished album was finally released on Ingo Knollmann's own label Solitary Man Records , which until then was actually more known as an export label for European bands in Asia.

Walter Schreifels appeared as a guest star, and at the end of the last song Somewhere Someday he picked up the refrain from Break My Stride .

style

Overall, the sound on Coma Chameleon is a bit darker than on the previous Donots albums, but above all more varied. The songs To Hell with Love , Break My Stride and This Is Not a Drill are characterized by fast punk rock. On the other hand, with the song Stop the Clocks there is a melancholy feeling, which underlines the variety. Comparisons were made to Billy Talent , Beatsteaks , My Chemical Romance and Ash , among others . Especially since the first albums were strongly in fun punk or in the then very popular Melodycore of the 1990s, such as Blink-182 , Pennywise and Simple Plan , this album was a significant increase, much more serious and darker. Many critics reported that the band had been completely revamped and had now outgrown kiddie punk and was now playing adult punk rock.
