life and career
In the late 1980s, Schreifels was a member of many New York hardcore bands, including Youth of Today , where he played bass, and Gorilla Biscuits , where he played guitar. Both groups were committed to the straight edge idea.
From 1989 - before the Gorilla Biscuits dissolved - Schreifels founded the band Moondog, whose unpublished recordings and demos were only released in October 2006 by Anthology Recordings. After a concert at the CBGB , Moondog became the more metal-oriented post-hardcore band Quicksand . In these projects Schreifels was the frontman and main songwriter.
In the mid-1990s, Schreifels continued to work in the CIV group with the musicians of his former band Gorilla Biscuits and, according to his own account, wrote the first CIV album Set Your Goals without being considered a member of the band.
In 1997 Schreifels founded the label Some Records together with Sammy Siegler and Matt Pincus . In 1999 he produced the album No Division by Hot Water Music . He later formed the melodic indie rock band Rival Schools . This released the album United by Fate on Island Records in 2001 and separated in 2003. Walking Concert , his next project, is influenced by British bands and performers such as Elvis Costello , The Kinks and The Smiths and released the album Run to be Born in 2004 . In 2005 there was a reunion of the Gorilla Biscuits; Since 2006 Schreifels has been living temporarily in Berlin . Since 2008 the band Rival Schools has been active again and in 2011 released their second album "Pedals". In addition, Rival Schools released the material recorded in the follow-up phase to "United by Fate", which had leaked and appeared on the Internet for several years and "lost", in 2013 on the album "Found".
In 2010 Schreifel's solo acoustic LP An Open Letter to the Scene was released , on which he covered the agnostic front song Society Suckers . His backing band for the tour that same year consisted of bassist Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits), drummer Drew Thomas (Youth of Today), guitarist Dave Hill and guitarist / keyboardist John Herguth (Atlantic / Pacific, House & Parish).
He also took over background vocals in the song Kotzen (feat. Walter Schreifels) on the 2008 album Egotronic by the band of the same name (German electro / punk ) . In 2012 he sang the chorus in the song Love is a Killer feat on the album Wo es Beginnt by the band Madsen . Walter Schreifels .
