Propagandhi is an existing since 1986 Hardcore / Punk - band from the Canadian Winnipeg .

history

Propagandhi was founded in 1986 by Chris Hannah (vocals, guitar) and Jord Samolesky (drums) in Winnipeg, Canada ( Manitoba Province ). Bassist Scott Hopper completed the band's first line-up. The first appearances, among others as the opening act for Fugazi , took place in 1991 with Mike Braumeister on bass. He was followed by bassist and singer John K. Samson , with whom the band recorded their first albums.

Fat Mike , owner of the independent label Fat Wreck Chords , became aware of Propagandhi and released their debut album How to Clean Everything in 1993 . This was followed by a European tour as the opening act for his band NOFX . In 1996 the second album, Less Talk, More Rock was released . After the album was released, bassist John K. Samson left the band and formed The Weakerthans . He was replaced by Todd Kowalski, former singer and guitarist of the band I-Spy. In 2001 and 2005, Propagandhi released the albums Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes and Potemkin City Limits on Fat Wreck Chords and G7 Welcoming Committee with the line-up Hannah, Samolesky, Kowalski . In 2006 the band won the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for the song "A Speculative Fiction".

In 2006 guitarist David Guillas, a former member of the group Giant Sons, joined the band as the fourth member. In April 2007 the live DVD Live from Occupied Territory was released . In September 2009 the quartet released the album Supporting Caste on the labels G7 Welcoming Committee, Smallman Records and Grand Hotel van Cleef. The sixth album Failed States was released in September 2012 on Epitaph Records .

The band members are politically active and campaign for PETA , the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the Grassy Narrows Blockade , among others . The band summarized their political views in their 1996 album Less Talk, More Rock with the phrase Animal-Friendly - Anti-Fascist - Gay-Positive - Pro-Feminist (combined with an A in the circle, which stands for anarchism ). According to Chris Hannah, misogynist and homophobic tendencies in parts of the punk scene should be problematized, and this clear positioning of the band caused the sales figures of their records to fall back then.

Guitarist David Guillas left the band in 2015. He was replaced by Sulynn Hago. The band originally intended that Guillas would continue to be involved in studio recordings, while Hago (who, unlike the rest of the band, lives in Florida) plays second guitar at concerts. In the end, however, Hago was listed as a band member for the album Victory Lap , while Guillas recorded only a few guitar tracks. Victory Lap was released on Epitaph Records on September 29, 2017.

Chris Hannah and Jord Samolesky founded the music label G7 Welcoming Committee in 1997 . The label released 59 albums and spoken word works by 2014. The portfolio includes bands like ... But Alive , The Weakerthans and The (International) Noise Conspiracy, as well as political activists like Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn . G7 Welcoming Committee is a collective that is based on the principles of Parecon .

In 2007, Chris Hannah ranked second in an online poll for The Beaver, published by Canada's National History Society, as "Worst Canadian Ever."

style

The band's musical style has changed a lot over the years. While the early work was characterized by melodic hardcore , punk rock and hardcore punk , elements from thrash metal and progressive rock predominate on the later albums . The band themselves have always called their own style "Progressive Thrash". The album Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes from 2001 can be seen as a stylistic turning point . The sarcastic humor of the band was largely put aside, musically this is where Propagandhi's opening to metal begins. Chris Hannah's vocals became much clearer and more melodic and formed a contrast to the screams of the new bassist Todd Kowalski. This change of style was pursued on the following albums, for example in the form of more complex song structures and more profound, often personal lyrics.

As musical influences, the band members name punk and hardcore bands such as Dead Kennedys , DOA , Dayglo Abortions , NoMeansNo , I-Spy and SNFU , as well as thrash metal and progressive rock bands such as Voivod , Rush , Sacrifice , Giant Sons and Razor .

Propagandhi covered songs by Cheap Trick ( I Want You to Want Me ), Concrete Blonde ( True ), Code of Honor ( What Price Will You Pay? ), The Lowest of the Low ( Gamble ), Corrosion of Conformity ( Technocracy ), Giant Sons ( Tertium Non Datur ) and Black Widow ( Come to the Sabbath ).

Propagandhi lyrically deal with socially critical, political and personal issues such as human rights, women's rights, animal rights, homophobia and nationalism.
