Sacrifice is a Canadian thrash metal band from Toronto that was formed in 1983.

history

The band was formed in late 1983 by guitarists Rob Urbinati and Joe Rico. A short time later, drummer Andrew Banks joined the band. Together they began to record cover versions of Judas Priest and Black Sabbath . Bassist Scott Watts later joined the band, while drummer Andrew Banks was replaced by Craig Boyle. The line-up was completed with singer John Baldy. On January 12, 1984, the band made their first appearance at Larry's Hideaway in Toronto, which was followed by an appearance in Ontario . On these performances they mainly played cover versions of well-known songs. In 1984 and 1985 they each recorded a demo with their own songs. Then guitarist Urbinati also took over the post of singer, while singer Boyle left the band. Ernie Fletch was the new drummer, but the band separated from him after only one concert on March 23, 1985 at Larry's Hideaway . Gus Pynn replaced Fletch on drums. A few more local appearances followed, including with Slaughter .

On June 16, 1985 the demo The Exorcism was recorded. This increased the band's notoriety greatly, allowing Sacrifice to play as the opening band for Exodus in August 1985. As a result, the band reached a contract with Diabolic Force . In the fall of 1985 the band entered the Future Sound Studio to record the debut album Torment in Fire . The album was released that same year on Metal Blade Records in the US and Roadrunner Records in Europe . By the time the album was released, the band was already working on new songs and finished in late 1985. In July 1986, the band went to the Open Sound Studio to record another demo. This was followed by an appearance in Kitchener , Ontario, with Megadeth as the opening band for King Diamond . In September followed a gig in Québec and another at the No Speed Limit Festival together with bands like Possessed , Voivod , DRI and Agnostic Front in Montreal . Another gig with Slayer followed in Toronto.

In January 1987 the first appearances outside Canada followed with concerts in Detroit and Chicago . Further appearances in Canada followed by April 1987. Then the band went to Grant Avenue Studio in Toronto to record the album Forward to Termination . It was released again through Diabolic Force, or through Metal Blade and Roadrunner Records for other regions. A music video for the song re-animation was also made. This was followed by appearances at the Milwaukee Metal Fest in July 1987 with bands such as Death Angel , Trouble and King Diamond. In November 1987 followed an appearance together with Nuclear Assault . This was followed by appearances in Ottawa, Quebec and Montreal in December.

In December 1988 the band went back to the studio to record a new demo with bassist Scott Watts playing the electric guitar. A few days later, Sacrifice appeared as the opening band for Motörhead . In 1989 the band recorded another demo. A few months later the band entered the Phase One studio in Toronto to record another album. It was produced by Joe Primeau and Brian Taylor. Diabolic Force Records remained the band's label, while Metal Blade distributed the album called Soldiers of Misfortune worldwide. The album was released in 1991. A video for the song SOM was also released. Towards the end of the year a tour with Razor followed . Drummer Gus Pynn left the band a little later and was replaced by Mike Rosenthal. In 1991 a tour of Great Britain followed with Bolt Thrower and Believer .

In 1993, the album Apocalypse Inside was released through Metal Blade Records. It was produced by Dave Carlo (guitarist for Razor). During the summer bassist Scott Watts was replaced by Kevin Wimberley. After a tour through the USA in the same year in which the band had supported Death , Sacrifice broke up for the time being.

In 2006 the band reunited. In 2010 they released the album The Ones I Condemn .

style

Sacrifice plays typical 1980s thrash metal and is compared to other bands in the genre such as Kreator , Slayer and Exodus .
