Death Angel is an American thrash metal band from the San Francisco Bay Area .
history
The band was formed in 1982 by Rob Cavestany ( lead guitar, vocals ), Andy Galeon ( drums ), Dennis Pepa ( bass ) and Gus Pepa ( rhythm guitar ). Mark Osegueda joined the band as a singer in 1984 after having worked as a roadie for Death Angel. All band members at that time are related and come from the Philippines .
The first demo tape from 1983 was still heavily influenced by the NWOBHM. Andy Galeon was only 14 years old when the band recorded their second demo tape in 1986 called Kill as One , which was produced by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and with which the band clearly oriented itself towards Thrash Metal. A year later the debut album The Ultra-Violence was released on the Enigma Records label , showing the band as accomplished instrumentalists and innovative songwriters. In 1988 Frolic through the Park was released , confirming the success of the debut and showing influences from funk and hardcore . The video for the single Bored was a success and brought Death Angel a record deal with Geffen Records . The third album, Act III , was just as popular with the critics as its predecessor, but hardly sold in the USA and Europe due to lack of support by the label, but was quite successful in Asia. In Act III , influences of various other types of music can be heard what the genre boundaries of thrash metal expanded and made even more demanding than his predecessors the album.
Before the band could play and promote their third album live in Europe and the USA, the band's tour bus crashed in the Arizona desert , with drummer Andy Galeon seriously injured and taking a year to recover. During the drummer's forced break, singer Mark Osegueda left the band to lead a life apart from music.
The remaining members decided to dissolve Death Angel and instead form the band The Organization , with lead guitarist Rob Cavestany taking over the vocals (for which he was already responsible in the early days of Death Angel). The label subsequently released the live album Fall from Grace , but this happened without much influence from the band. The Organization released two albums: The Organization and Savor the Flavor and went u. a. on tour with Rob Halford and Motörhead .
After The Organization disbanded in 1995, the band members went on various solo projects, e. B. Swarm with Rob Cavestany, Andy Galeon and Mark Osegueda, who has returned to the microphone. Swarm toured the US with Jerry Cantrell in 2001. Also in 2001, Death Angel played in the original cast on the Thrash-of-the-Titans - charity festival for the cancer-stricken singer Chuck Billy of Testament . After this performance, several record companies tore the band, who wanted a new album by Death Angel. The band played a few concerts in the US and went on tour with Anthrax and Metallica. Then Death Angel came together with Testament on the No Mercy Festival tour to Europe, where they announced a new album for spring 2004. Before the new album was released, the band came back to Germany to tour with the Danish band Mnemic as well as with Disbelief and Darkane .
Finally, in April 2004, the new album The Art of Dying was released by Nuclear Blast under great pressure . The album got quite good reviews, but it falls short of expectations, as it is very Thrash-heavy and missed the expected experiments.
On February 29, 2008, the album Killing Season was released , which was followed by an extensive tour in the summer months. In October 2008 longtime bassist and co-founder Dennis Pepa announced his departure from the band, as he was striving for musical change and wanted to open up new opportunities. According to the band, the separation was completely peaceful. On January 10th, 2009, the new bassist Sammy Diosdado was introduced. Diosdado plays together with Death Angel singer Mark Osegueda at the All Time Highs and in the hardcore band The Sick . However, Diosdado was exchanged for Scarecrow bassist Damien Sisson at the end of 2009 . Originally drummer Andy Galeon had previously left the band to take care of his children more. His replacement is the Vicious Rumors drummer Will Caroll.
In September 2010 the album Relentless Retribution was released . The album The Dream Calls for Blood was released in Europe on October 11th and in North America on October 15th, 2013. A tour with Dew-Scented and Extrema through Europe followed. Then the band toured America with Children of Bodom .
In May 2016, the band released The Evil Divide . Almost exactly three years later, in May 2019, Humanicide was released , with which the band was able to place itself in the top 20 in Germany for the first time. With its title song, the band was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the first time in November 2019 .
