Extrema is an Italian thrash and groove metal band from Milan , which was founded in 1986.

history

Tiziano Spigno (2018)

The band was formed in the winter of 1986 and consisted of guitarist Tommy Massara, guitarist and singer Andrea Boria, bassist Luca Varisco and drummer Stefano Bullegas. After the band had developed a few songs, the EP We Fuckin 'Care followed in 1987 , of which around 3,000 copies were sold. After several line-up changes, a permanent line-up was found in 1989 with guitarist Tommy Massara, bassist Mattia Bigi, drummer Cristiano Dalla Pellegrina and singer Gianluca "GL" Perotti. The band then played as the opening act for Slayer , DRI and Corrosion of Conformity . After the band traveled to New York City to play a gig and released a demo in 1991, the band reached a contract with Contempo Records . In 1993 the band released their debut album with Tension at the Seams . The album featured a cover version of Truth Hits Everybody , originally by The Police . The release was followed by a tour of Italy, with the band also playing as opening act for Metallica and Vasco Rossi . The band also released a music video for the song Child of Boogaow . Towards the end of 1993, the EP Proud, Powerful 'n' Alive followed , which included a cover version of the song Too Drunk to Fuck , originally by the Dead Kennedys . In 1995 the album The Positive Pressure (of Injustice) followed. The release was followed by a tour with over 100 performances.

In 1996 the band recorded the single Mollami together with the rap artist Articolo 31 . From 1996 to 1999, the band members also devoted themselves to various side projects, before the next album followed in 2001 with Better Mad than Dead . In the first half of the year the band played various concerts, including an appearance with Slayer , while music videos were released for the songs Another Nite and Wannabe in the second half . Another music video followed in 2003 for All Around and the release of And the Best Is Yet to Come , a compilation of rare songs by the band, including all of their songs that were created through collaborations with other artists, remixes, and three new songs . After that, a music video for the song The World Decline was released . This was followed by appearances with Metallica and Korn, among others . In December 2004, drummer Chris Dalla Pellegrina left the band, before a suitable replacement was found a few months later in Paolo Crimi. After a few more concerts, the band made an appearance on Gods of Metal . In June and July 2005, the band went to Rodger Music Studios to record the album Set the World on Fire , which was followed by a music video for Nature . The band also celebrated their 20th anniversary with the live album Raisin 'Hell with Friends: Live at the Rolling Stone and the DVD Murder Tunes & Broken Bones - 20 Years Anniversary DVD . Both releases appeared in the summer of 2007 on Scarlet Records . Towards the end of the year, the band recorded a music video for the acoustic version of the song Another Nite . In 2008, concerts followed along with Death Angel , while the previously released albums were re-released with bonus songs. In addition, the band was voted the best Italian band in Italian Metal Hammer , while the live DVD that was released was voted the best DVD in the Italian edition of the rock-hard magazine. In May 2009, the next album Pound for Pound followed via Scarlet Records . In May 2013, the band released their follow-up album The Seed of Foolishness on the same label .

style

The band played classic Thrash Metal on their debut album Tension at the Seams , which was "a relic of another era" when it was released. The songs are reminiscent of works by Anthrax and Death Angel , while the playing of the bass is reminiscent of Mordred and Mind Funk . The pieces on the second album The Positive Pressure (Of Injustice), which are comparable in sound to the works of Pantera, are described as not very memorable. The third album Better Mad than Dead has a similar sound, with strong Nu Metal influences being audible, especially groups like Slipknot and Korn are mentioned in this context. It also uses electronic effects that sound like White Zombie around 1995. Furthermore, influences from groups like Biohazard and Sepultura (especially the album Chaos AD ) were used. The influences of Nu Metal can also be heard strongly on the album; voice effects are used that are reminiscent of Korn. In addition to classic thrash metal bands such as Suicidal Tendencies and Testament , the band partly reminds groups such as Stone Sour or Tenacious D . On the album Pound for Pound , too , according to Marc Halupczok from Metal Hammer, the band incorporated various styles, “even if the basis is always Thrash”, although they would “somehow seem disoriented”. In addition to the aforementioned band Biohazard, Machine Head can also be heard . The band makes use of genres such as alternative rock , funk and classic rock , and instruments such as a banjo were also used. The album is compared with Green from Forbidden . In addition to the Nu-Metal traits, The Seed of Evil also features similarities to groups like Channel Zero , Flotsam and Jetsam, and Perzonal War .
