The Palais von Nell is a baroque palace in the Saarland municipality of Perl . It is a listed monument as an individual monument .

history

The palace was built in 1733 by Johann Marx and his wife Elisabeth Arnoldi on a fiefdom of the Trier cathedral chapter as a courtyard house. Iron anchors in the facade of the building still show the initial letters of the builders. At the end of the 18th century, a wine press house was added to the baroque building. At the beginning of the 19th century it came into the possession of the Trier merchant and banker Georg Friedrich Job von Nell , who was married to Anna Maria Emilia Marx (1788-1851). It remained in the possession of the von Nell family until 1982. After 1945 it was a restaurant for a few years and from 1961 to 1980 it was an educational and leisure center of the Saarland youth welfare organization. Today the building is privately owned.

architecture

The originally nine-axis building with two storeys and corner blocks is completed by a high mansard roof. The entrance portal located in the fourth axis is slightly highlighted and has a high, far cantilevered roof. The original oak front door with empire shapes has been preserved. To the north is the old wine press house, with five axes on the ground floor and four on the first floor. A large arched gate forms the entrance. The mansard roof of the manor house continues over the wine press house and slopes down steeply.

Behind the front door there is a wide hallway that leads to a staircase in the rear. On both sides of the corridor there are four rooms in the basement that are only accessible from one another. A long corridor connects the living rooms on the upper floor.

garden

Across from the palace, on the other side of the street, a garden portal from the 18th century with a double flight of stairs leads into the Nell'schen Park, which was transformed into a baroque garden as part of the “ Gardens without borders ” project . It is open to visitors all year round free of charge. The approximately 2900 m² large complex was laid out as a low baroque garden with box tree delimitation of paths and beds according to old plans and planted with alternating decorative beds. A fountain stands in the center of the strictly geometric garden. At the edge of the garden are the Quirinus Chapel and the Catholic Church of St. Gervasius and St. Protasius .

Remarks

  1. The information about the purchase varies. Some sources speak of an acquisition at the end of the 18th century, others speak of an acquisition through marriage. The surname of Nells's wife supports this thesis. Von Nell married Anna Maria Emilia Marx in 1807. See also Wackenroder (1939) p. 168 and Herbert M.
